The centre joint being supported in that slightly negative position, recoil pressure on the breech face tends only to strengthen the lock. Recoil is thus transferred via the linkage to the slide or barrel extension and so permit the bolt and barrel to recoil together locked firmly, until the toggle is unlocked by camming action, e. g. On semi-automatic or automatic firearms, a mechanism actuated by the magazine platform which retains the bolt/breechblock rearward after the last round of the magazine has been fired, indicating that reloading is necessary. When a fresh magazine is inserted, the device may release automatically or may have to be manually operated, so that the bolt/breechblock goes forward and chambers a round.
