A crash pad is a 3-4 inch foam landing mat that is placed on the ground under the climb. The purpose of this pad is to protect the climber in the event of falling. The main types of insoluble fibre include cellulose(primary material of plant cell walls), many hemicelluloses(cereal fibres), and lignins(non-polysaccharide). This is the best type of fibre for constipation, as it helps draw water into the stool to soften it and can help speed up transit time. It also increases fecal weight, which improves bowel movement consistency, and delays glucose absorption.

En cas de choc sur le détecteur, la perte d'intensité lumineuse dans la fibre optique est détectée. Le détecteur en déduit la force du choc et, selon sa variation dans le temps, détermine la nature de l'obstacle heurté. Si le calculateur conclut que cet obstacle est une personne, il déclenche des actionneurs pyrotechniques qui, en 40 ms, soulève le capot de quelques centimètres. Cette procédure augmente la distance entre le piéton et les composants rigides du moteur et modifie l'angle pour que la tête du piéton ne vienne pas heurter le pare-brise.

Cyclic steam stimulation. In order to soften the oil sand before pumping, for several weeks high-pressure steam is injected into the oil sand formation. Steam helps recover the resource in several ways. The heat softens the oil sand and the water vapour helps to break up the bitumen from the sand. The pressure created in the underground environment causes cracks to be formed that adds drive to move the bitumen to producing wells. After a portion of the reservoir has been satisfactorily saturated, the steam is turned off and the reservoir allowed to sit for several weeks. After it has been allowed to sit and soak up the steam and moisture, the production phase brings the bitumen to the surface. It either flows on its own, or is pumped up the well to the surface. When the rates of production start to decline, the reservoir is pumped with steam once again.

Friction stir welding uses a cylindrical, shouldered tool with a profiled pin that is rotated and slowly plunged into the joint line between two pieces of sheet or plate material, which are butted together. Frictional heat is generated between the wear resistant welding tool and the work piece. This heat causes the work piece material to soften without reaching the melting point and allows the tool to traverse the weld line. As it does, the plasticized material is transferred from the leading edge of the tool to the trailing edge of the tool shoulder and pin. It leaves a solid phase bond between the two work pieces.

Le soudage par friction-malaxage (SFM) utilise le même principe [que le soudage par friction] pour joindre des plaques bout à bout ou avec chevauchement. L'outil utilisé est de forme cylindrique (profiled pin)avec un épaulement (tool shoulder). Le tout est mis en rotation à une vitesse de quelques centaines de tours par minute. Alors que l'outil approche les plaques, la rotation génère assez de chaleur pour ramollir le métal, sans jamais le rendre liquide, afin de permettre à l'outil de pénétrer dans les plaques. Une fois l'épaulement bien appuyé, assez de chaleur est générée pour permettre à l'outil de suivre une trajectoire de translation en suivant le joint entre les deux plaques et ainsi les souder. Les plaques doivent être solidement fixées car une grande force est requise pour faire entrer l'outil dans le métal.

In addition to flour improvers and bleaching agents, anti-staling agents are often used in bread-making. In fresh bread the starch molecules are arranged in a completely haphazard and random manner, whereas in stale bread they are arranged in a more orderly way. Anti-staling agents may act by combining with components of starch in such a way to prevent the starch molecules from taking up an orderly arrangement.
