Canada is working through many international organizations and instruments to strengthen measures to protect the marine environment, including global fish stocks. In particular, the 1995 United Nations Agreement on Straddling and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks(commonly called the United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement, or UNFA) provides the framework for the conservation and management of straddling and highly migratory fish stocks in high seas areas regulated by RFMOs. Since the creation of NAFMC in 1985, North Atlantic Fisheries have been committed to working toward the establishment of a framework to manage and conserve straddling fish stocks, and have endorsed UNFA as a key tool to advance these objectives. The United Nations Agreement for the Implementation of the Provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of December 10, 1982 relating to the Conservation and Management of Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks, commonly referred to in Canada as UNFA, was adopted in August 1995 by a UN Conference and was signed by Canada on December 4, 1995 and ratified on August 3, 1999.
