To steer the aircraft on the ground, the pilot in the left seat uses the nose-gear steering wheel on the console to the pilot's left. During take-off and landing, directional control of the aircraft is maintained solely by the rudder. The aircraft's ground steering system comprises several components, including the nose-gear steering wheel, a system of cables and pulleys, and a steering control valve fitted to a nose-wheel steering cylinder, which is attached to the nose-wheel strut. The cable and pulley system links the steering wheel to the control valve. When the pilot turns the steering wheel to the left or right, tension is applied to the cables connected to the pulley on the steering control valve. This action determines the direction and the deflection rate of the nose wheel by allowing hydraulic fluid to enter one side or the other side of the nose-wheel steering cylinder; the steering cylinder then deflects the nose wheel through a system of gears.

Lorsque le pilote tourne le volant vers la gauche ou la droite, une tension est appliquée sur les câbles reliés à la poulie du robinet de commande d'orientation. Cette action contrôle le taux de braquage et la direction de la roue de nez en permettant au fluide hydraulique de circuler d'un côté ou de l'autre du vérin hydraulique de direction du train avant; ce dernier fait tourner la roue de nez par le biais d'un système d'engrenage.

The lunar surface sensing probe attached to each landing gear footpad, except the forward one, is an electromechanical device. The probes are retained in the stowed position, against the primary strut, until landing gear deployment. During deployment, mechanical interlocks are released permitting spring energy to extend the probes so that the probe head is approximately 5 feet below the footpad. When any probe touches the lunar surface, pressure on the probe head will complete the circuit that advises the astronauts to shut down the descent engine.

A shock or strut damps excessive vehicle spring motion by the controlled movement of fluid under pressure. Fluid provides the resistance to movement. The amount of that resistance is controlled by valving. Before Monroe gas charged shocks and struts, valve orifices could not be enlarged to increase riding comfort without losing damping effectiveness. So valving was compromised in one of two directions : soft or hard valving. With soft valving, fluid flows more easily. The result is a smooth ride, but with poor handling--and a lot of roll and sway. When valving is hard, fluid flows less easily. Handling is improved, but the ride can become rough.

With the push of a button, the driver selects ... Soft ... then changes to soft valving, providing a smooth, comfortable ride while still offering good handling characteristics.

The system is based on a special landing gear called a jump strut, which works by giving the aircraft the proper attitude for take-off,.... First, the system extends the nose gear, raising the nose. A few milliseconds later, the main gear is activated(’jumps’) in its turn, increasing the distance between wheels and fuselage, while rotation continues. After a vertical leap of some 6ft, the aircraft slows and descends slightly because of the increased drag at the higher angle of attack.
