"Estoppel may also be defined to be a legal result or "conclusion" arising from an admission which has either been actually made, or which the law presumes to have been made, and which is binding on all persons whom it affects. Or we may adopt the definition of estoppel given by Bramwell, L. J., as follows :"An estoppel may be said to exist where a person is compelled to admit that to be true which is not true, and to act upon a theory which is contrary to the truth. This formula nearly approaches a correct definition of estoppel. "(Everest & Strode's, 3rd ed., 1923, p. 1).

DEF

An atmospheric optical phenomenon, particularly in the polar regions, in which the observer appears to be engulfed in a uniformly white glow owing to the lack of contrast between the sky and the surface; shadows, horizon and clouds are not discernible, and the sense of depth and orientation are lost.

OBS

Whiteout occurs over an unbroken snow cover and beneath a uniformly overcast sky, when, with the aid of the snow blink effect, the light from the sky is about equal to that from the snow surface. Blowing snow may be an additional cause.

OBS

This phenomenon is experienced in the air as well as on the ground.

OBS

Today the term whiteout is [also] often used to describe a blizzard or snowsquall when blowing snow has reduced visibility to a few metres. But this is not a true whiteout. True whiteouts occur mostly in the Arctic and the Antarctic when unbroken snow cover and a uniformly overcast sky combine to produce a solid white glow. People in whiteouts see no shadows or horizon and lose all sense of depth and orientation.

OBS

DEF

Subject field(s)
  • The Lungs
  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Mining Dangers and Mine Safety
DEF

An occupational disease of coal workers resulting from deposition of coal dust in the lungs.

OBS

Black lung disease is the common name for coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) or anthracosis, a lung disease of older workers in the coal industry, caused by inhalation, over many years, of small amounts of coal dust.

OBS

anthracosis : A histological term describing the accumulation of black pigment in lung tissue or in other organs. In the lung the accumulation often appears as macular lesions, usually in a centrilobular location, along the walls of bronchioles, but also along interlobular septa or in the subpleural space. This pigment is mainly composed of carbonaceous material and may originate from cigarette smoke(or other smoked drugs, such as crack cocaine), atmospheric pollution, residential exposure to wood(or biomass) smoke or occupational exposure to carbon-containing dusts, such as diesel exhaust, soot, fly ash, carbon black, graphite and coal. Thus a more or less marked degree of anthracosis may be found in nonsmoking urban residents from heavily polluted areas or in inhabitants(often females) of poor countries with a cold climate(so-called ’hut lung’). Anthracosis is only rarely associated with overt pulmonary disease, except after prolonged, heavy, usually occupational exposure, when the condition is preferably labelled as a pneumoconiosis, e. g. graphite pneumoconiosis(graphitosis) or coal workers pneumoconiosis. The latter pneumoconiosis is often called anthracosilicosis(particularly in continental Europe), because this pneumoconiosis has been considered to be caused predominantly by the silica content of coal dust. While this may be true in many instances, the use of anthracosilicosis to indicate coal worker's pneumoconiosis is probably not entirely appropriate, because the pathology of coal workers pneumoconiosis is different from that of silicosis.

CONT

peroxyde organique : MeOOMe (peroxyde de diméthyle); peroxyde inorganique : NaOONa (peroxyde de sodium).

OBS

  • Paleontology
DEF

A (usually fossil) organism of uncertain relationships.

CONT

Permian reefs were mainly constructed by organisms referred to as problematica, calcareous algae, bryozoans, echinoderms, and calcareous sponges. Problematica (or, in this case, microproblematica because of their small size) are enigmatic organisms which are hard to classify because they do not seem to have left any clear descendants (or even close relatives) whose activities and remains might provide clues to their ancestors’ identity. These enigmatic organisms are therefore known to paleontologists as problematica (problematicum is the singular form) for their problematic relation to other living things. (Generally speaking, the farther back in time we look, the more problematica there are, because many extinct organisms have no clear descendants.

CONT

Where question exists as to the organic or inorganic origin of a specimen, the terms dubiofossil ..., problematicum ..., or problematic fossil are used.

OBS

problematicum(pl. problematica) : While in theory almost any organism could be labelled a problematicum under [the given] definition(almost every species has some degree of uncertainty about its relationships, even if only within its genus), in practice the term is generally reserved for those taxa for which the uncertainty runs to a very high level, generally phylum level or higher. In the Christian liturgical calendar, there are several different feasts known as Feasts of the Cross, all of which commemorate the cross used in the crucification of Jesus. The original name of this feast was the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, by which name it is still known by the Orthodox Church and the Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church. Since 1970, it has been officially called the Triumph of the Cross by the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church. It is also popularly known among Anglicans and Lutherans as Holy Cross Day. In Jewish folklore the feast was established by Saint Peter for converted pagans to observe instead of Rosh Hashana. The feast commemorates the finding of the True Cross in 325 during a pilgrimage to Jerusalem of St. Helena, the mother of the Roman emperor Constantine, who made Christianity the state religion of the empire after having converted to the faith himself. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was then built at the site of the discovery, by order of Helena and Constantine. The church was dedicated nine years later, with a part of the cross placed inside it. In 614, the part of the cross was carried away from the church by the Persians, and remained missing until it was recaptured by the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius in 628. The cross was returned to the church the following year after initially having been taken to Constantinople by Heraclius.

Fresh powder snow soon becomes "skied out", or "tracked out". This is sometimes known as "crud"(although this term is also used for breakable crust)... The problem is that the fresh snow is now packed down in some areas, and piled up in others. So the amount of resistance that your skis encounter is always changing. You need to constantly look ahead and anticipate this. When you’re about to go through a deep pile, push your feet forward slightly. For the firmer sections, stand more in the middle of the ski. DEF

A method of pictorial drawing which shows a building or other object in three dimensions. The plan is set up to scale to a true angle of either 45 degrees or of 30 degrees and 60 degrees; and vertical are also drawn to scale; but by this method diagonals and curves are distorted.

DEF

A geometrical design showing an object in three views, similar to an isometric, the difference being, the true plan is set at any convenient angle instead of a 30° angle. When this method is used, all horizontal and vertical dimensions are to scale, but diagonals and curves are distorted.

DEF

A three dimensional representation of an architectural drawing in which all parallel lines remain parallel and to scale, unlike a perspective, the lines of which converge.

Here we develop a method in the spirit of the depth from defocus literature for recovering depth from microscopic imagery.

OBS

This microscopic imagery is only obtainable in a true, ultra illumination darkfield, employing superior plan achro or plan apo medical grade oil immersion iris diaphragm objectives and the proper condenser, which would be of the oil immersion variety also.

CONT

Since the specified limit is for residual contamination, the use of swipes as a method of measurement may also lead to underestimating the true level of contamination, although it is useful for determining the amount of material which is readily removable at that time. Because of the above consideration, the recommended method of determining compliance with the criteria is through the use of a beta contamination monitor, properly calibrated for measuring the beta particles from natural uranium. If this instrument is used assuming that its entire response is due to beta radiation, any error will be in the safe direction.

CONT

CONT

A comment is a statement of opinion on facts.

CONT

Not only statements of intention, but also statements of opinion, know to be false, may be actionable as deceit, because "the existence of the opinion in the person stating it is a question of fact. It is true that, where the facts are equally well known to both parties, a false opinion expressed thereon by one does not give a cause for complaint to the other. The real explanation for this, however, is not that a statement of opinion is not a statement of fact about the condition of one's mind, but that the parties, bargaining at arm's length, are assumed to be competent to draw their own conclusions.

OBS

statement of opinion: Par opposition à "statement of fact".
