The ICBL was launched in October 1992 by a group of six non-governmental organizations : Handicap International, Human Rights Watch, Medico International, Mines Advisory Group, Physicians for Human Rights and Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation. These founding organizations witnessed the horrendous effect of mines on the communities they were working with in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America and saw how mines hampered and even prevented their development efforts in these countries. The International Campaign to Ban Landmines(ICBL) is a global network in over 70 countries that works for a world free of antipersonnel landmines and cluster munitions, where landmine and cluster munition survivors can lead fulfilling lives. The Campaign was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its efforts to bring about the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty. Since then, we have been advocating for the words of the treaty to become a reality, demonstrating on a daily basis that civil society has the power to change the world. As a member of the Cluster Munition Coalition, the ICBL is engaged in the global effort to ban cluster munitions and to address their humanitarian impact. In December 2006, the ICBL decided to engage extensively in the global effort to prohibit cluster munitions. This marked the first time that the ICBL had become significantly engaged on an issue other than antipersonnel mines. The main reasons for the ICBL' s decision were that cluster munitions inevitably end up leaving behind large numbers of unexploded ’duds’ which behave essentially like antipersonnel mines; that many ICBL members had been already working extensively on cluster munitions; and that international efforts to achieve a global ban on cluster munitions were at a crucial point, a point where the ICBL could have a meaningful impact.

Mothballing is the process of stabilizing a facility so that no damage occurs to the facility should it make sense at a later time to incur the capital expenditures associated with continuing to operate, extending the life, or repowering the facility. Typically, a decision to mothball a facility might be made as a hedge against, or in anticipation of, changes in market conditions; i. e., increases in relative fuel prices, or an increase in the value of installed capacity.... Typical activities involved in mothballing a facility might include the following types of activities intended to preserve existing equipment :-’Racking Out’ or removal and storage of motor control center circuit breakers or 'switchgear’(this would also be done for a facility that has been retired and is scheduled for dismantling)-Placing a heat source or desiccants in the furnace to maintain a temperature above the dew point(at which condensation collects and corrodes the boiler structures.)-The application of grease or other coatings to reduce corrosion of components such as pumps and motors.-The installation of an air desiccant system to blow dry air through the steam turbine, condenser, boiler tubes and pipes.

The starting point of any breeding program is the parent material. Since the breeder cannot as yet create or modify genes to suit his requirements(this may be possible in the future by a technique called genetic engineering) he must choose parents already endowed with the genes for the qualities he wants in the new varieties. Because the new variety must be adapted into growing conditions of Western Canada, and above all, must possess milling and baking qualities characteristic of wheat grown in that area, one of the parents will usually be a typical Canadian variety. The other will be the carrier of the gene the plant breeder wishes to introduce into the Canadian variety, for example, a gene for resistance to a particular strain of stem rust.

Les lignées parentales sont au point de départ de toute sélection. Comme le généticien ne peut pas encore créer ou modifier les gènes selon ses besoins (ce qui sera peut-être réalisable une fois certains travaux en cours terminés), il doit choisir des souches possédant des gènes liés aux qualités qu'on désire retrouver dans les nouvelles variétés. Puisque la nouvelle variété doit être adaptée aux conditions de croissance de l'ouest du Canada et, plus encore, posséder les valeurs meunières et boulangères qui caractérisent le blé cultivé dans cette région, l'une des souches devra être une variété canadienne typique. L'autre sera porteuse du gène que le sélectionneur désire introduire dans la variété canadienne, par exemple un gène de résistance à une certaine race de rouille noire.

Lesser Cornstalk Borer-This insect damages corn by boring into the plant at the base of the stem. This boring causes "deadheart" and may greatly reduce stands. Deadheart occurs when the terminal(central) growth point of the plant is destroyed, causing withering and turning yellow. Plants with a deadheart are stunted and do not produce harvestable ears.
