A tuck loop is formed by only partially raising the needle so the old loop does not clear, but rises sufficiently for feeding a new yarn into the hook. The old loop which did not clear is the held loop and the new yarn forms the tuck loop. When the needle is cleared on a subsequent course, the knit loop formed is pulled through the tuck loop in addition to the held loop. Tuck loops are used for runguards, in the band area, and some places in the panty. The tuck loops are also used to put in sewing marks and machine identification marks.

Modifications of the luminescent process occur with the addition of lattice defects and/or chemical impurities into luminescent material. In some cases an impurity embedded within the crystal lattice forms a transition pathway through which an excited electron can make a radiative energy band gap transition. In so doing, the radiative transition which takes place at the site of the lattice impurity has spectral properties associated with the atomic transition properties of the impurity and such an impurity is termed an activator or luminescent center.

The Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer MERIS forms part of the core instrument payload of ESA’s environmental research satellite ENVISAT-1. MERIS is funded by ESA. The demands of the European scientific community for a global environmental monitoring system, whose technical characteristics enable the extraction of quantitative information from ocean colour data, as well as for documentation of the state and evolution of the atmosphere and land surfaces, led to the conception of MERIS. The oceanographic mission is radiometrically the most demanding in terms of low radiance levels and their associated high signal-to-noise ratios. The instrument will be capable of detecting the low levels of radiation emerging from the ocean (linked to the water constituents by the processes of absorption and scattering), in addition to acquiring information about the atmospheric medium through which the observation is made as well as terrestrial environments. The characteristics of MERIS will also be of great value for the retrieval of information on land surfaces, in particular that of global biomass.

These sensors with nearly global daily coverage employ visible wavelength channels of observation with spectral characteristics suited for water quality monitoring of turbid lakes and coastal regions. Turbidity is one of the essential water quality indicators as it describes, in practise, the integrated amount of algae biomass and suspended matter.

The excess energy is given off to generate an electron-hole pair through a band-to-band transition. This generation process causes avalanche multiplication in semiconductor diodes under high reverse bias : As one carrier accelerates in the electric field it gains energy. The kinetic energy is given off to an electron in the valence band, thereby creating an electron-hole pair. The resulting two electrons can create two more electrons which generate four more causing an avalanche multiplication effect. Electrons as well as holes contribute to avalanche multiplication.

[A factor] represented by a term in the van Deemter equation. It is the contribution to plate height that is due to molecules traveling along paths through the column and it depends on the particle size and geometry of the packing.

Eddy diffusion broadens the band when passing through the column and detected in the chromatography. This is due to the molecules of the sample traveling through the column along many different paths of different lengths. The shortest path is the front of the band and the longest path is located in the back of the band. This can be corrected if the band is broad and the column support is of small size and uniform. This effect may be described by the van Deemter equation. H=A+(B/u) +Cu. Where M is the flow rate, A is the eddy diffusion term, B/u is the longitudinal diffusion term and Cu is the mass-transfer rate term. The eddy diffusion is independent of the flow-rate and only is concerned by how the column was packed.

Method for investigating atmospheric behaviour using pulsed light beams (lasers).

Light detection and ranging(lidar) is a technique in which a beam of light is used to make range-resolved remote measurements. A lidar [instrument] emits a beam of light, that interacts with the medium or object under study. Some of this light is scattered back toward the lidar. The backscattered light captured by the lidar's receiver is used to determine some property or properties of the medium in which the beam propagated or the object that caused the scattering. The lidar technique operates on the same principle as radar; in fact, it is sometimes called laser radar. The principal difference between lidar and radar is the wavelength of the radiation used. Radar uses wavelengths in the radio band whereas lidar uses light, that is usually generated by lasers in modern lidar systems. The wavelength or wavelengths of the light used by a lidar depend on the type of measurements being made and may be anywhere from the infrared through the visible and into the ultraviolet. The different wavelengths used by radar and lidar lead to the very different forms that the actual instruments take. The major scientific use of lidar is for measuring properties of the earth's atmosphere, and the major commercial use of lidar is in aerial surveying and bathymetry(water depth measurement). Lidar is also used extensively in ocean research and has several military applications, including chemical and biological agent detection. Lidar can also be used to locate, identify, and measure the speed of vehicles. Hunters and golfers use lidar-equipped binoculars for range finding.

The radar frequency bands were first designated by code letters for secrecy during World War II; these letters are still in common use, although the exact frequency intervals to which they apply have undergone some redefinition. Displays and Control Module (DCM). This is an irregularly shaped box of switches, valves, and digital displays that gets mounted on the chest. It controls the primary life support system and the secondary oxygen pack.

Displays and Control Module(DCM)... Along the top are switches for power, communications mode selection, caution and warning. There is also a switch that controls the water that is fed to the Liquid Cooling-and-Ventilation Garment. A digital display is used to monitor the various suit circuits. At the top left of this module is an emergency relief valve. If the primary life support system were to ever malfunction, the astronaut would still have access to the secondary oxygen pack. To activate this secondary oxygen pack, all the astronaut would have to do is open a purge valve by squeezing a set of pinchers. This valve releases air pressure on the chest plate-this is the same valve that is used at the end of EVA [Extravehicular Activity] to depressurize the suit. Also on the left, a step down from the purge valve, is the mechanical-suit pressure gauge. Along the right-hand side of the module, are two switches : the ventilation-fan switch and the push-to-talk switch. The ventilation-fan switch can activate and deactivate a fan which circulates air through the helmet and other parts of the suit. The push-to-talk switch is similar to one you would find on a CB [Citizen Band] radio. If the astronaut wants to talk, he has to push the button to be heard, and if he wants to receive voice messages, he has to release the button. On the front of the panel are other controls for volume, temperature, and suit pressure.

Le bouton du ventilateur peut activer et désactiver le ventilateur qui fait circuler l'air dans le casque et les autres parties du scaphandre [ou de la combinaison]. Le poussoir d'émission ressemble à ceux qu'on trouve sur les radios BP [bande publique]. Si l'astronaute veut parler, il doit pousser le bouton pour être entendu, et s'il veut entendre les messages, il doit relâcher le bouton. Sur le panneau avant de la boîte de trouvent d'autres dispositifs de commande du volume, de la température et de la pression d'air du scaphandre [ou de la combinaison].

Starch gel electrophoresis has been a popular technique, although it is now somewhat superseded by the use of polyacrylamide gels, which minimize convection and diffusion effects. A block or "plate" of starch gel is prepared, and the sample is applied in a narrow band(line) across the block about midway between the ends, which are contacted with electrodes through a connecting bridge. When current is passed through the cell, the different components of a mixture move with velocities that depend on their electric charges, their sizes, and their shapes. As electrophoresis proceeds, the negatively charged components migrate toward the anode and the positively charged components migrate toward the cathode. The result is a series of separated bands or lines of sample constituents, such as visualized by a stain.

In band sealing, a pouch mouth is introduced between two moving bands, which are pressed by heated bars. The heat passes through the bands and into the pouch material, softening it for sealing. As the pouch continues along between the bands, the bands are next pressed together by chilled bars that withdraw heat form the pouch seal through the bands. The bands then progress to release the pouch. Band sealing is fast and widely used for closing pouches filled with product.

Using a tubular stock wound in rolls, it forms, cuts and applies a shrink band around the neck of each bottle. Adjustment and functioning of this machine must be accurate, to assure correct placement of the band on each bottle. Once banded, bottles then move through a short shrink tunnel.

A machine used for the process of band sealing.

In band sealing, a pouch mouth is introduced between two moving bands, which are pressed together by heated bars. The heat passes through the bands and into the pouch material, softening it for sealing. As the pouch continues along between the bands, the bands are next pressed together by chilled bars that withdraw heat from the pouch seal through the bands. The bands then progress to release the pouch. Band sealing is fast and widely used for closing pouches filled with product.

Tamper-Evident Closures. Tamper-evident caps have been in use for years, though earlier they were referred to as "pilferproof caps". Today these metal and plastic caps provide visible evidence of seal disruption and are used for over-the-counter(OTC) drugs, beverages, and food products. The two kinds of TE closures are "breakaway" or "tear band" closures used for pressurized and general sealing applications, and TE vacuum designs for vacuum sealing applications. Most shrink bands are made of oriented plastic films that shrink around a container when heat is applied. They are used as labels, tamper-evident neckbands, combination label/neckbands, and devices for promotional packaging.

Burner Efficiency Tests and Adjustments... A smoke spot tester is used to measure the soot content of flues gases. The serviceman will adjust the air intake band on the burner until a visually smokeless flame is produced in the combustion chamber. The probe of the smoke testing apparatus is inserted through the hole in the flue pipe and a flue gas sample is drawn through a piece of filter paper. The resulting soot mark on the paper is compared in intensity to a standard chart. The chart shows measurements labelled 0 to 9 and most residential oil furnaces can burn cleanly enough for a 0 to 1 rating... a number 2 smoke is ideal.
