Both of these designs exploit unique variations in the propagation delays through interconnects and logic gates. The arbiter PUF... comprises two identically laid out paths. To measure a response bit from the arbiter, a rising edge is input simultaneously to the two paths. This input signal races through the circuit, and a latch at the output detects which path propagated the input signal faster.

Winefordner et al. described a special, more sensitive cell based on changes in dielectric constant and constructed to allow gas flow between the plates of a capacitor which is a part of the tank circuit of a 70-Mc/sec Clapp oscillator, the output of which is beat against that of a reference oscillator. With the difference frequency between oscillators adjusted to zero with pure carrier gas flowing through the detector, the presence of a foreign vapor in the cell will produce a different frequency which is linearly related to the amount of material introduced through an injection port in the carrier gas stream and inversely proportional to the absolute temperature for a given component at a constant density or concentration in the cell and for a particular operating frequency.

A pneumatic rate-of-rise spot detector consists of a small dome-shaped air chamber with a flexible metal diaphragm in the base. A small metering hole allows air to enter and exit the chamber during normal rise and fall of atmospheric temperature and barometric pressure. The great majority of heat pumps work on the principle of the vapour compression cycle. The main components in such a heat pump system are the compressor, the expansion valve and two heat exchangers referred to as evaporator and condenser. The components are connected to form a closed circuit... A volatile liquid, known as the working fluid or refrigerant, circulates through the four components. In the evaporator the temperature of the liquid working fluid is kept lower than the temperature of the heat source, causing heat to flow from the heat source to the liquid, and the working fluid evaporates. Vapour from the evaporator is compressed to a higher pressure and temperature. The hot vapour then enters the condenser, where it condenses and gives off useful heat. Finally, the high-pressure working fluid is expanded to the evaporator pressure and temperature in the expansion valve. The working fluid is returned to its original state and once again enters the evaporator. The compressor is usually driven by an electric motor and sometimes by a combustion engine.

"That means that their contacts are separated when the door or window is in the normally closed position. When the door or window is opened, the contacts are released, causing them to close. There are basically three types of pilot burners : 1) the millivolt; 2) the bi metal; and 3) the liquid filled.... The bimetal pilot is named so because of the sensing element. The sensing element is made of two dissimilar metals welded together so that they become one piece. The two metals have different expansion rates and this causes the two metals to bend when heated. As the bimetal element is heated by the pilot flame, a movable contact is pushed toward a stationary contact. When these contacts touch, an electrical circuit is completed through them. This control is usually employed to operate in the control, or low voltage, circuit.
