A derrick crane with the top of the mast held by means of guy ropes.

The guy derrick is made up of a boom and a mast that are connected at the top by a cable which allows the boom to be raised or lowered. The mast, which is longer than the boom, is held firmly in a vertical position by guys, although the derrick, as a whole, may rotate through a horizontal angle of 360 degrees. The load is applied to the boom by means of another cable, which may be used to raise or lower the load without moving the boom in a vertical plane. This type [of derrick] is used in the erection of large, steel building frames.

The Klemheist knot(or Machard knot) is a type of friction hitch used as a part of a system to ascend or descend a climbing rope.... A Prusik loop is wrapped round the climbing rope two or three times. The loop is then threaded through itself and carefully tightened to wrap the climbing rope neatly. In use, strain must only be taken on the hanging loop. Never grip and pull on the knot itself-a rapid descent can occur! If the knot slips when load is placed on the hanging loop, wrap the loop around the climbing rope another time or two as necessary until there is no slippage.

The knot is tied with a thin cord, usually 5 mm or 6 mm in diameter, onto the rope. The climber then attaches himself to the knot by clipping the cord onto his harness. Progress up a fixed rope is made by sliding the knot up the rope and then weighting or loading it with the climber’s weight. When loaded, the Klemheist knot cinches onto the climbing rope, allowing the climber to progress upward. When the knot is unloaded, it loosens, allowing the climber to slide it up the rope.

A wing that is not linked to the fuselage by means of a mast or bracing wire.

The most common current wing design is the cantilever. A single large beam, called the main spar, runs through the wing, typically nearer the leading edge at about 25 percent of the total chord. In flight, the wings generate lift, and the wing spars are designed to carry this load through the fuselage to the other wing. To resist fore and aft movement, the wing will usually be fitted with a second smaller drag-spar nearer the trailing edge, tied to the main spar with structural elements or a stressed skin. The wing must also resist twisting forces, done either by a monocoque "D" tube structure forming the leading edge, or by the aforementioned linking two spars in some form of box beam or lattice girder structure.

In making a Spanish windlass, fasten a rope between the load you are to move and an anchorage some distance away. Place a short spar vertically beside this rope, about halfway between the anchorage and the load. This spar may be a pipe or a pole, but in either case it should have as large a diameter as possible. Make a loop in the rope and wrap it partly around the spar. Insert the end of a horizontal rod through this loop. The horizontal rod should be a stout pipe or bar long enough to provide leverage. It is used as a lever to turn the vertical spar. As the vertical spar turns, the rope is wound around it, which shortens the line and pulls on the load. Return Flow Pressure Atomizing Oil Burner. This burner is a modification of the pressure atomizing burner; it is also called a modulating pressure atomizer. It has the advantage of wide load range for any given atomizer,... this wide range is accomplished through a return flow nozzle which has an atomizing swirl chamber just ahead of the orifice. Good atomization throughout the load range is attained by maintaining a high rate of oil flow and high pressure drop through the swirl chamber. The excess oil above the load demand is returned from the swirl chamber to the oil storage tank or to the suction of the oil pump. Control of burning rate is effected by varying the oil pressure in both the oil inlet and oil return lines. Except for the atomizer, load range, and method of control, the information given for the straight pressure atomizing burner applies to this burner.

Suspended mast crane : A powered overhead travelling crane where the crab carries an inverted mast.
