The term "baffling factor" is used to describe the degree of short-circuiting that occurs within a basin. Accurate BF allows the correct inactivation values to be calculated and allows optimized disinfection performance to be maintained.

Water does not flow through all treatment processes in a perfectly mixed condition. In some treatment units there can be substantial short circuiting. The disinfectant contact time(T), also referred to as T10,... is an estimate of the detention time within a basin or treatment unit during which 90 percent of the water passing through the unit is retained within the basin or treatment unit. T can be determined experimentally through a tracer study or it can be estimated based on a theoretical detention time(TDT) and baffling factor(BF).... Baffling factors(BFs) help estimate the contact time of a basin, pipe, or unit process based on the volume of and flow rate through the basin, pipe, or unit process.

There is an alternative between closed-and open-loop systems called standing column wells(SCWs). In a SCW, groundwater is pumped from the base of a deep well and directed to a heat exchanger.... A SCW consists of a long borehole mostly drilled in the bedrock and filled with groundwater... Typical installations use a PVC [polyvinyl chloride] pipe almost as long as the well within which a submersible pump is installed. In a conventional SCW, groundwater is pumped at the bottom of the well through a PVC pipe and returned below the dynamic level in the annular space of the borehole via a rejection pipe.... Before reinjecting the groundwater into the SCW, part of the flow rate can be diverted into a separate injection well. This process is called "bleed" and improves the system performance by attracting water from the undisturbed neighbouring ground through aquifer fractures. The bleed induces heat transfer by advection..., which improves significantly the thermal efficiency of the SCW.

In a telemedicine system, a patient is geographically removed from the presence of a doctor or other healthcare provider. For example, the patient could be at home instead of on site at a healthcare facility. Telemedical devices enable the healthcare provider to monitor the health status of a patient and potentially diagnose and treat some medical problems without the need for the patient to travel to the healthcare facility. The use of telemedical systems has the potential to reduce the cost of healthcare, and to improve the quality of healthcare through increased patient monitoring. Various known telemedicine systems provide a device to a patient that enables the patient to transmit medical data to a doctor or healthcare provider. Some devices are configured to record biosignals, such as heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration rates, and transmit data of the recorded biosignals to a database for later review.

A hydraulic fracture is formed by pumping the fracturing fluid into the wellbore at a rate sufficient to increase the pressure downhole to a value in excess of the fracture gradient of the formation rock. This is not possible for quantum particles. They are not little spinning balls in that sense.

Growing Degree Days. The underlying idea is that development does not occur unless the temperature exceeds a certain minimum threshold value or base temperature. The base temperatures are determined through research and experimentation and are different for different organisms. It has been found that there are many other factors, which may influence the actual temperature the organism is experiencing or that may influence their growth and development. For instance it is possible that the organism may be experiencing a temperature a few degrees more or lesser than that recorded depending on weather it spends most of its time in the shade or under direct sunlight. Precipitation and the presence of weeds may also indirectly influence the growth and development of insects and plants. The fertility and nutrient content of the soil is directly related to the growth rate of insects and plants. In light of these many factors and some other scientific considerations a base temperature of 50 degrees Fahrenheit is considered acceptable for all plants and insects.
