Transport Canada keeps a watchful eye over ships transiting Canadian waters through NASP. It is the primary tool for detecting ship-source pollution in waters under Canadian jurisdiction. A sewage pump is an essential component of any waste processing system. While most plumbing systems rely on gravity to bring the waste material down to the sewer level to be processed, occasionally the sewage line is on higher ground than where the waste is originating from. In these cases, a sewage lift pump must be used to counter the effects of gravity and transport the waste matter to its destination.... A sewage lift pump, the primary component of a sewage lift system, is essentially a large tank in which waste water and material collect. Within the tank is a float device which raises and lowers depending on the level of waste in the tank at any given point in time. When the tank fills with waste matter and the float rises to a certain point within it, the sewage lift pump activates. The lift pump essentially forces the waste water and material up through a series of pipes to the sewer or septic lines where it will continue to be processed. As the lift pump moves more material from the tank, the float will begin to lower. Once it reaches a certain point towards the bottom of the tank, it will trigger the lift pump to shut off. All sewage lift pumps also have a built-in alarm that will sound if the float fails to operate correctly.

Sponge Spicule.-... Sponges do not have definite organs to carry out their functions and generally do not move from place to place, which resulted in the early mistaken belief that they were plants rather than animals. Possessing a simple cellular anatomy, sponges are composed of an outer layer of protective surface cells and an inner layer of flagellated cells that help move food and water through its inner cavities. A gelatinous substance, through which amoeboid cells move and carry out a variety of functions, is located between the two layers. The cells aid digestion, transport of nutrients, reproduction, and produce the structures that compose the skeleton of the sponge. The structures, known as spicules, give the sponge its shape and remain intact even after the animal has died.

One of the western boundary currents of the North Pacific subtropical gyre.

A deep, narrow, and swift current, it continues from the Philippines Current in a northeastward direction from Taiwan along the continental rise of the East China Sea, through Tokara Strait, and close to the eastern coast of Japan. At 35°N it separates from the coast and flows eastward into the Pacific as a free jet known as the Kuroshio Extension. It forms a marked temperature and salinity front with the Oyashio, which meets the Kuroshio Extension from the north and then flows parallel to it. Like all other western boundary currents, the Kuroshio develops instabilities and sheds eddies. Its unique characteristic is that south of Honshu it switches between three quasi-stable paths across the Izu Ridge at irregular intervals of 18 months to several years. Volume transport in the Kuroshio increases downstream and reaches 57 Sv... in the Kuroshio Extension, increasing seasonally by 15% during summer. The current's path in the extension is characterized by large meridional excursions in the so-called First and Second Crest at 145° and 152°E. On approaching the Shatsky Rise at 157°E, the Kuroshio Extension divides into several paths that tend to recombine before the Emperor Seamounts near 170°E cause the current to split again and disintegrate. The flow then continues as the North Pacific Current.

In an anti-aircraft turret for armoured units, especially for armoured vehicles, the turret constitutes an independent unit and is equipped with a launching ramp, e. g. for rockets. The launching ramp is designed as an integral part of the turret and is rotatable in the vertical direction from a launching position, via a neutral transport position to a loading position where the ramp projects down through a loading hatch in the unit down into the turret. The ramp is equipped with an armoured protective mantle, which is rotatable with the ramp and which covers the ramp on the top and on the sides.

Agencies working for NASA use this term for a lighter-than-air aircraft designed to explore the planets. An aerobot is a helium-filled balloon fitted with heaters that are powered by solar cells. During the day, solar energy will heat the helium and give it extra buoyancy; at night, the balloon will drop to lower altitudes or even touch the ground. A limitation of the design is that its movements cannot be fully controlled, though it may have some ability to dictate its altitude, perhaps through dropping ballast, releasing gas or managing its temperature. A big advantage of this design is that it doesn’t need fuel, which is expensive to transport and which runs out all too soon. Unlike satellites, aerobots fly in the atmosphere, so allowing experiments to be carried out on its chemistry. They can also view and record the ground from much lower altitudes than is possible with satellites. NASA plans to send a device of this sort to Mars in 2003, and possibly later to Titan, Venus and Jupiter.
