Snow snake is played on a track. Snow is piled up at the beginning of the track to a height of about 4 feet. Then the track gradually slopes downward to follow the contour of the earth. A log is then placed on top of the snow pile to make a track that the shooters must throw their snakes in. The community who has the best throws, wins. The best throwers win prizes but more importantly, bragging rights until the next event.

Type of serve in which the player imparts a forward or overspin rotation to the ball causing it to bounce high after ground contact. The spin imparted by the racket is the opposite of what it would be normally.

Not to be confused with the "American twist (serve)","twist (serve)" or kick serve (=kicker), which is a topspin serve with an added "twist". The term "topspin serve" is a generic. One can deliver a "topspin serve" without it "kicking up" very high. "Kicker": slang. See also "high-kicking serve".

Gaiting straps are put on a horse to keep his rear end in line. I’ve put them on trotters on both sides. Sometimes they’ll throw their feet out pretty wide into a wheel or the sulky, particularly on a half-mile track where they’re going at a terrific clip around the turns. A lot of good horses that I’ve raced had to wear gaiting straps over a half-mile track. A gaiting strap catches them up along the stifle and keeps them from throwing their foot out.

To tidy this up : Relase Speed [equals the] Average force [multiplied by] the time of application [divided by] the mass of implement.

The right leg was picked up fairly straight with heel leading, and on landing the right foot was at 90 degrees to the line of throw, resulting in a deceleration of the forward speed of the body. This action, known as the "cross-step", is very seldom seen today.

Pas croisé : Phase du lancer du javelot. C'est l'action de courir de côté, le bassin étant placé de côté. C'est la période pendant laquelle le lanceur va chercher à prendre «de l'avance» des pieds sur le haut du corps.

La foulée de mise en place du corps commence dès que le pied gauche se pose au sol. On l'a souvent nommée «pas croisé», mais cette image traduit assez mal la réalité. En fait, dans toutes les foulées de course les jambes se croisent. Simplement, dans cette troisième foulée de préparation, la pose du pied droit en avant est plus rapide que dans une course normale et elle revêt une forme particulière.

Beware of the “Ugly Baby Syndrome. ” An “Ugly Baby” is developed at the concept phase and you can not put it back. So what happens? It gets dressed up to make it look OK. It hangs around for about 18 years because the factory will “adopt” the ugly baby and resist re-design. The moral of the story is that the concept phase is extremely important to prevent creation of an unworkable design that ends up staying around because no one wants to throw away something they’ve started working with.
