A jigger consists of a board and two levers so arranged that a backward pull on a line attached to one lever is translated into a forward thrust which propels the board along beneath the ice.

Another method uses a prairie ice jigger, a sledlike wooden device that slides along the underside of the ice. The jigger is launched under the ice, towing a rope. When the rope is pulled, a lever is raised; when the rope is released, the lever springs back in such a way that it pushes against the ice and jerks the jigger forward.

Une autre méthode consiste à se servir d'une navette, petit instrument de bois en forme de traîneau qu'on glisse le long de la surface inférieure de la glace. Sous la glace, la navette traîne une corde derrière elle et, lorsqu'on tire sur la corde, un levier se redresse; au moment où la corde est relâchée, le levier se rabat de telle sorte qu'il s'appuie contre la glace et pousse la navette vers l'avant.

Pillow block bearings are a form of mounted bearing used to provide load support for a rotating shaft axis. The bearing housing mounts to a surface parallel to the shaft axis. Selection of the appropriate bearings can be accomplished based on the shaft size and the radial and thrust load requirements. Pillow block bearings are designed to support a shaft : the mounting surface is on a parallel line with the axis of the shaft.

When you start to push big volumes of water around in pipes at high pressures, the laws of physics can cause some problems-especially going around corners. This situation is particularly problematic when the pump is started, and the pressure in the pipes rises dramatically. This can cause tremendous forces on elbows and junctions in the system, and as a result they need to be reinforced with thrust blocks... Basically nothing more than a rough block of poured concrete, the thrust block braces the pipe, thus helping to prevent ruptures in the line.

The skier makes a series of short turns back and forth across the fall line, thrusting the tails of the skis back and forth to do it. The shoulders move back and forth a bit but, in short turns, the shoulder action is hardly noticeable. The optical illusion is that the legs thrust the skis first to one side and then to the other as the body stays motionless.

This provides a 1. 5 m section prior to the final stopping position to relieve pressure on the landing gears... and a section 1. 5 m long after the stopping position to reduce the thrust required and, thereby, blast on "break away".
