From its formal launch in 1996, Rolls-Royce has been involved in all main propulsion system elements of this project. During JSF’S Concept Demonstration phase, Rolls-Royce provided a range of components that enabled Lockheed Martin's X-35B prototype to prove its STOVL capabilities. Rolls-Royce supplied a LiftFan, driven by a shaft from the engine via a geared clutch, and a swivelling nozzle providing horizontal thrust for forward flight that can turn through 90 degrees to redirect the engine's exhaust flow down for vertical lift.

Électrobroche à paliers hydrostatiques : Le principe de cette technologie est de transmettre la charge à travers un film de lubrifiant dont la pression est maintenue par l'intermédiaire d'une pompe extérieure; la principale différence par rapport au guidage à billes est qu'il n'y a jamais de contact entre les surfaces puisque la présence du film lubrifiant est assurée même pour une vitesse de rotation nulle. Elle présente les mêmes caractéristiques que l'électrobroche à paliers magnétiques avec cependant les avantages suivants : le film de lubrifiant qui sépare les surfaces du palier joue le rôle d'amortisseur pour filtrer les vibrations; la portance est très élevée. Cependant comme pour les paliers magnétiques, cette technologie est coûteuse. b) Électrobroche à paliers magnétiques : Cette technique ne connait pas les inconvénients des roulements à billes car les frottements et par conséquent l'usure sont supprimés. Cependant, la portance des paliers et le manque d'amortissement de la broche qui «flotte» dans un champ magnétique constituent deux limites à son utilisation.

Two theories are recognized on the operation of a propeller in converting engine shaft torque to thrust. The momentum theory deals with the energy exchange to the air mass acted upon by the propeller. The other and most commonly used concept in determining propeller performance is the blade element theory. In this theory(known as the Drzewiecki theory), each propeller blade is considered as being composed of an infinite number of airfoils(called blade elements) joined end to end, forming a shape similar to a twisted airplane wing.
