Following a careful preparatory process involving consultations with African Governments, African experts and several UN agencies concerned with African development, UNEP, in co-operation with the Organization of African Unity(OAU) and the Economic Commission for Africa(ECA), organized the first African Ministerial Conference on the Environment in Cairo from 14-16 December 1985. Since the inception of AMCEN, UNEP continues to be the primary source of funding for the implementation of the decisions, as well as the programmes of the Conference. Late in 1995, the International Development Research Centre(IDRC), the International Institute for Sustainable Development(IISD), and the North-South Institute(NSI) asked Maurice Strong Secretary General of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development and now the Executive Coordinator for Reform in the Office of the UN Secretary General, to bring together a small group of eminent Canadians from the academic, business, and nongovernmental sectors in order to reflect on Canada's role and position in the world of the 21st century and, more specifically, to consider Canadian strengths and capabilities with regard to the global development challenges ahead. In November 1996, the International Development Research and Policy Task Force released its report, "Connecting with the World : Priorities for Canadian Internationalism in the 21st Century. Vers la fin de 1995, le Centre de recherches pour le développement international (CRDI), l'Institut international du développement durable (IIDD) et l'Institut Nord-Sud (INS) ont demandé à Maurice Strong, secrétaire général de la Conférence des Nations Unies sur l'environnement et le développement de 1992 et aujourd'hui coordonnateur exécutif de la réforme au Cabinet du Secrétaire général de l'ONU, de réunir quelques éminents Canadiens du milieu universitaire, du secteur privé et d'organisations non gouvernementales afin de réfléchir sur le rôle et la situation du Canada dans le monde au XXIe siècle, plus précisément sur les atouts et les capacités de notre pays devant les défis que le monde devra relever en matière de développement.
