Un number stands for United Nations number. The UN number is a four-digit number assigned to a potentially hazardous material(such as gasoline, UN 1203) or class of materials(such as corrosive liquids, UN 1760). These numbers are used by fire fighters and other emergency response personnel for identification of materials during transportation emergencies. UN(United Nations) numbers are internationally recognized. NA(North American) numbers are used only for shipments within Canada and the United States. PINs(Product Identification Numbers) are used in Canada. UN, NA and PIN numbers have the same uses.

When the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization(UNTSO) was formed in 1948, the initial purpose was to observe the truce established in Palestine between the newly created state of Israel and its Arab neighbours. UNTSO currently assists other UN missions in the Middle East to monitor a number of truces and ceasefire arrangements. Observer groups are stationed in Egypt, on the Golan Heights, in southern Lebanon and in Beirut, and in Syria.
