The Union of Northern Workers(UNW) or the Northwest Territories(NWT) Public Service Association as it was known then, began organizing employees of the new Territorial Government in 1969. In 1988, the Government of Northwest Territories(GNWT) passed the Union of Northern Workers Act which officially changed the name of the organization and recognized the UNW as the bargaining agent for its members working for the government. The UNW is a component(partner) of the Public Service Alliance of Canada(PSAC). The PSAC provides the UNW and its members with some specialized services. They do organizing drives, lobby governments at the federal level, provide legal advice, and representation in arbitrations. The UNW provides direct service to its members, representing them in job appeals, grievances and everyday workplace problems. UNW also prepares bargaining demands for contract negotiations. The association is a corporate union of breeders for the purpose of furthering warmblood horse breeding in Canada. The purpose of the association is : to unite the breeders, owners and friends of Warmblood horses in Canada; to maintain of the Stud Book of Canadian Warmblood horses including approved stallions, mares and foals; to maintain a uniform breeding program of warmblood horses in Canada; to promote breed shows and representation in exhibitions; to provide information to breeders, owners and friends and generally encourage public understanding of the Canadian Warmblood horse. First Ministers created the Federal/Provincial/Territorial Council on Social Policy Renewal in 1996 and directed it to guide the social union initiative. The Council monitors work on overarching social policy issues and, as well, coordinates and supports "sectoral" councils that examine cross-sectoral issues such as supporting children and persons with disabilities. Artists’ Legal Advice Services(ALAS) was established in 1985 by Canadian Artists Representation Ontario, with the assistance of the Cultural Collective of the Law Union of Canada. It offers through Legal Aid Ontario a free-of-charge summary legal advice clinic in Toronto to artists of any discipline and who qualify for Legal Aid.
