Many different types of evaporation pans are being used. The best known pans are the Class A evaporation pan(circular pan) and the Sunken Colorado pan(square pan). The principle of the evaporation pan is the following : the pan is installed in the field; the pan is filled with a known quantity of water(the surface area of the pan is known and the water depth is measured) ;the water is allowed to evaporate during a certain period of time(usually 24 hours). For example, each morning at 7 o’clock a measurement is taken. La difficulté d'accéder à la mesure directe de l'évaporation d'une surface d'eau a conduit à l'utilisation d'appareils constitués d'un bac, d'un bassin ou d'une cuve de profondeur variable et d'assez grande surface, dans lesquels on mesure l'abaissement du niveau de l'eau sous l'action de l'évaporation. On peut citer : 1) Les bacs d'évaporation sur charpente dont le type est celui dit «de classe A» [...] 2) Les bacs d'évaporation enterrés dont le type est celui dit «Colorado», mis au point par la Station Expérimentale d'Agriculture du Colorado : il mesure trois pieds (91,4 cm) de côté et a une profondeur de 18 pouces (45,7 cm); l'eau est maintenue à 4 pouces (10,2 cm) du rebord, au niveau du sol. Il existe une version «métrique» de ce bac ayant un mètre carré de superficie et 50 centimètres de profondeur; il est enterré, son bord supérieur restant à dix centimètres au-dessus du sol et l'eau est maintenue à peu près au même niveau que le sol. 3) Le bac BPI (Bureau of Plant Industry/U.S.D.A.) Les bacs enterrés : à cause de leur enterrement, ils sont moins sensibles que les premiers aux influences des rayonnements solaires sur les parois, par contre, leur inconvénient serait les gouttes de pluie qui rebondissent sur le sol en recueillant divers détritus. Le bord du bac ne dépasse en effet le niveau du sol que de 10 cm environ. Le bac enterré le plus connu est le bac «Colorado». Il se présente sous la forme d'un carré de 91,4 cm de côté et de 46,2 cm de profondeur. Dextre [Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator] is designed so that only one arm can move at a time in order to avoid self-collision, achieve greater stability and maintain operational similarity with Canadarm2. The greater stability is provided by the immobile arm, which is first commanded to anchor Dextre to an ISS [International Space Station] stabilization point. At the tip of each arm, we find a "hand", known technically as the Orbital Replacement Unit/Tool Changeout Mechanism(OTCM). The OTCM consists of a set of parallel retractable jaws, which serve to grip payloads and tools. Each OTCM is also equipped with a retractable motorized socket wrench to mate and demate mechanisms on-orbit, as well as lights and a black and white camera. Dextre [Manipulateur Agile Spécialisé] ne peut toutefois bouger qu'un bras à la fois afin d'éviter les autocollisions, d'assurer une plus grande stabilité et de conserver une similarité opérationnelle avec le Canadarm2. Sa grande stabilité lui vient du bras immobile qui est commandé pour ancrer Dextre à un point de stabilisation sur la Station spatiale internationale dès le début des activités. Au bout de chaque bras se trouve une «main», que l'on désigne techniquement par changeur d'outils et d'unités remplaçables sur orbite (OTCM). L'OTCM comprend un ensemble de mâchoires parallèles rétractables servant à la préhension de charges utiles et d'outils. Outre des lampes et une caméra noir et blanc, il est également équipé d'une clé à douilles motorisée et rétractable pour accoupler et désaccoupler des mécanismes sur orbite.
