The Payload Support Center(PSC) is being implemented at the CSA [Canadian Space Agency] to conduct payload activities such as communication protocols verification and procedure validation & verification. The PSC will support crew training and mission simulations. The results of the PSC and DFL tests will be used in the final certification of a payload. In addition, the PSC will play an important role during the on-orbit operation of a payload. The payload flight backup unit or engineering model will be installed in the PSC and will be available to help the payload operators in case of any on-orbit problem. By using a duplicate of the payload in the PSC, the operators, with the help of the technical team, will be able to duplicate the situation and determine the proper corrective procedures. Those procedures will then be either forwarded to the on-orbit crew or to the ground operations personnel to correct the anomaly. The PSC includes the EXPRESS Rack Simulator, the Suitcase Simulator(when required), a workbench area for payload developers and a connection to the CSA Payload Telescience Operations Center(PTOC).

The Joint Airlock itself has two rooms, the "Equipment Lock" and the "Crewlock." The Equipment Lock is similar to a locker room, in that it is the primary area where the crew members don and doff their spacesuits ... It is also the primary area for servicing the spacesuits and stowing them. The Crewlock, which is separated from the Equipment Lock by a hatch, is where spacewalkers open the outer hatch and actually begin their excursions into space. It is similar in size to the shuttle’s airlock. Although the Joint Airlock Module is only 20 feet (6.1 meters) long, getting from one end to the other can be a slow process as astronauts prepare for their EVAs [Extravehicular Activities].

The Joint Airlock(also known as "Quest") is provided by the U. S. and provides the capability for ISS-based Extravehicular Activity(EVA) using either a U. S. Extravehicular Mobility Unit(EMU) or Russian Orlon EVA suits. Before the launch of this airlock, EVAs were performed from either the U. S. Space Shuttle(while docked) or from the Transfer Chamber on the Service Module. Due to a variety of system and design differences, only U. S. space suits could be used from the Shuttle and only Russian suits could be used from the Service Module. The Joint Airlock alleviates this short term problem by allowing either(or both) spacesuit systems to be used.

The Orlan spacesuit was used for Russian EVA's on Salyut, Mir, and the International Space Station. It was designed by the Zvezda OKB [Russia : Experimental Design Bureau], and derived from the Kretchet suit intended for use on the lunar surface. It consisted of flexible limbs attached to a one-piece rigid body/helmet unit. The suit was entered through a hatch in the rear of the torso. The exterior of the hatch housed the life support equipment. Maximum operation time was three hours when the Orlan-D version of the suit was first used on Salyut 6. Later Orlan-DM versions of the suit increased this period to nine hours. The integrated design meant that no external hoses were required as in the American space suits. The suit standard pressure was 0. 40 atmospheres, so that a prebreathe period of only 30 minutes was required. Electrical power and communications were via an umbilical cord to the station. Control of the suit was via a panel on the chest, with the markings in mirror image. The cosmonaut viewed the panel using a mirror on the wrist of the suit.

The Plasma Contactor Unit discharges accumulated electrons(using a hollow cathode assembly that is provided as furnished equipment) from the International Space Station structure reducing the potential difference between the Station structure and the surrounding charged plasma environment. Dextre [Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator] is designed so that only one arm can move at a time in order to avoid self-collision, achieve greater stability and maintain operational similarity with Canadarm2. Environment Control and Life Support System(ECLSS) : The orbiter's Environmental Control and Life-Support System purifies the cabin air, adds fresh oxygen, keeps the pressure at sea level, heats and cools the air, and provides drinking and wash water. The system also includes lavatory facilities. The cabin is pressurized to sea level(14. 7 psi) with 21 percent oxygen and 79 percent nitrogen, comparable to Earth's atmosphere. The air is circulated through lithium hydroxide/charcoal canisters which remove carbon dioxide. The canisters are changed on a regular basis. Excess heat from the cabin and flight-deck electronics is collected by a circulating coolant water system and transferred to radiator panels on the payload bay doors where it is dissipated. The fuel cells produce about seven pounds of water each hour. It is stored in tanks, and excess water is dumped overboard. The lavatory unit collects and processes body waste, and also collects wash water from the personal hygiene station. The lavatory unit, located in the middeck area, operates much like those on commercial airlines but is designed for a weightless space environment.

Extra Vehicular Activity Radiation Monitor ... The purpose of EVARM is to carry out flight experiments to investigate and characterize the doses received by different parts of an astronauts body (e.g., skin, eyes, and blood-forming organs) during an EVA. The doses will be analyzed with respect to the time and position of the EVA as well as the orbit, altitude, and attitude of the Station. A relatively new type of electronic radiation dosimeter, the Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MOSFET) will be used to collect dose measurements.

EVARM is designed for use with the NASA Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or spacesuit, worn by both Space Station and Space Shuttle crewmembers during Station operations. The experiment consists of a storage/badge reader unit and 12 badges-a set of three each for up to four spacewalkers. The sets are designated EV-1, EV-2, EV-3 and EV-4, corresponding to the designation of each potential spacewalker. When not in use, the badges are placed in the storage-reader box, which is stored in the Human Research Facility payload rack. The badge contains a silicon chip specially designed by Thomson-Nielsen-called a Metal Oxide Silicon Field Effect Transistor(MOSFET)-that continuously measures total radiation dosage and a connector that plugs into the badge reader. The reader that can download badge is shown placed in a pocket in the lower left leg of an astronaut liquid cooling garment. Badges also are placed in the front torso and fabric communications cap of the spacesuit undergarment(NASA/JSC). During normal operations, the Station crew will record the background radiation dosage on each badge and transmit it to the ground every week. Shortly before a spacewalk by Station or Shuttle crew members, the crew will measure the radiation dosage of each badge to be used in the spacewalk. A set of three badges will be inserted into pockets sewn into the front torso and front leg areas of the liquid cooling undergarment and the top of the fabric communications cap of each spacesuit. Those locations were selected because of the radiation hazard to sensitive soft tissues such as eyes and internal organs, as well as the hazard to the skin on the arms and legs, which are not as well shielded as the torso. Shortly after the spacewalk, the crew will plug each badge set into the badge reader. They will later transfer the data to the Human Research Facility laptop computer for transmission to the payload team on the ground.

An improved version of the Calibrated Synthetic Viewing(CSV) system developed at JPL [Jet Propulsion Laboratory] that used models of objects being manipulated and realtime video data to provide synthetic views of the manipulator workspace will be tested. This technology is intended to enable the conduct of manipulator operations in spite of obstructions that prevent a direct view of, for example, the interface between objects being mated. Upgraded software will be supplied by JPL and installed in the ARMSS [Automated Robotic Maintenance of Space Station] and the GCC [Ground Control Console]. An earlier version of this system was tested in FY96 [Fiscal Year]. As in the previous test, the test scenario will involve changing out a Remote Power Conditioning Module(RPCM), an ISS [International Space Station] orbital replacement unit(ORU). The surrounding structure will be "mocked up" to represent a typical ISS structure and ISS procedures will be used for the changeout.

The Secondary Oxygen Pack(SOP)... was created as a back-up measure to ensure the safety of the astronauts. It is a detachable unit that connects to the bottom of the primary life-support system(PLSS). The pack features two mini tanks that supply a total 30-minutes worth of oxygen enough time to get the astronaut to the Shuttle's airlock. The SOP operates in what scientists call an "open loop". Unlike the PLSS, the SOP doesn’t rely on a system that measures or monitors how the oxygen is being used and it does not conserve or recycle oxygen. Instead, the oxygen travels from the PLSS to the rest of the suit, but the contaminated oxygen gets dumped into space. This back-up supply can be activated manually with a valve or automatically when the oxygen pressure in the suit drops below 23. 79 kilopascals.

The PVR [Photovoltaic Radiator] is a critical component of the space station's thermal control system. It will cool the photovoltaic power system electronic equipment and the batteries used for power storage. The PVR will also provide environmental cooling for the service module during early phases of the space station. Each PVR Orbital Replacement Unit(ORU) consists of 7 radiator panels, each about 6 feet by 12 feet in size. The radiator panels are designed to deploy on orbit from a stowed position about 2 feet high to an extended position about 50 feet in length. Each ORU weighs about 1, 600 pounds, with a total of 4 units in the final space station configuration.

This clean bench consists of an operation chamber, a disinfection chamber and a control unit to communicate with JEM system. Japanese Experiment Module "Kibo". The SPCF (Solution Protein Crystal Growth Facility) ... can provide opportunities for fundamental study of crystal growth of various solutions and proteins in space. SPCF consists of two major units, the Solution Crystallization Observation Facility (SCOF) and the Protein Crystallization Research Facility (PCRF). The SCOF has a cell cartridge for growing the crystal in solution. The temperature of crystal can be controlled. Moreover the SCOF provides the in-situ observation capability. The SCOF has several observation equipment, the two wavelength Mach-Zehnder interferometer microscope, the Michelson interferometer microscope and the light scattering measurement. They provide the capability to observe the crystallization morphology and the crystal surface and to measure the temperature of the liquid phase, the concentration distribution and the particle size.

The Solution Crystallization Observation Facility(SCOF) is installed in a 1/4 DR [drawer] space in the JEM [Japanese Experiment Module]. The SCOF consists of the main unit and a removable unit(cell cartridge), which can contain a maxximum of 4 sets of crystal growth cells. The main unit contains various observation apparatus, and various experiments that can be executed by changing the cell cartridges.
