La plate-forme inertielle de l'IU [Instrument Unit, cœur du lanceur de fusée] fournit une référence fixe qui permet au lanceur de s'orienter dans l'espace. En clair, une plate-forme inertielle, c'est un appareil qui reste toujours orienté de la même façon quoiqu'on fasse, un peu comme l'eau dans un verre. L'environnement qui entoure la plate-forme se déplace, mais cette dernière reste toujours dans la même position. Ceci permet de mesurer l'accélération et l'orientation du lanceur.

Système de navigation à inertie [...] Le système se compose d'une plate-forme inertielle, d'accéléromètres intérieurs et d'un ordinateur. La plate-forme, qui capte le déplacement de l'aéronef au-dessus du sol, comporte deux gyroscopes. Ceux-ci maintiennent leur orientation dans l'espace pendant que les accéléromètres captent toutes les variations de cap et de vitesse de déplacement. L'information provenant des accéléromètres et des gyroscopes est transmise à l'ordinateur, qui corrige la trajectoire afin de tenir compte des facteurs comme la rotation de la terre, la dérive de l'aéronef, la vitesse et la vitesse angulaire de virage. Les instruments d'attitude de l'aéronef peuvent également être reliés à la plate-forme inertielle.

Three inert SCALPELs were released by two AV-8B Harriers during a recent flight test at the Navy's China Lake test range in California, hitting their marks. SCALPEL is essentially a weaponized version of the company's enhanced laser guided training round with improved guidance and a small warhead. It is envisioned as an affordable option for close air support roles, especially in urban areas where it is crucial to hit targets precisely and avoid collateral effects. Medium-and large-sized unmanned aerial vehicles like the MQ-1 Predator could carry it as well as manned aircraft like the USAF F-16 and Navy/Marine Corps F/A-18 and AV-8B, according to Lockheed Martin.

The test program will be under the control of the Air Force Test and Evaluation Center(AFOTEC). The first stage, which lasts five months, is the Qualification Operational Test and Evaluation(QOT&E) at the Douglas facility in Yuma(Arizona). There is then a six-month Follow-on Test and Evaluation(FOT&E) at Barksdale AFB(Louisiana), which includes comprehensive testing of the aircraft's operational effectiveness and the ability of USAF personnel to maintain it.
