... each JEM-EF [Japanese experiment module-exposed facility] payload must have a space shuttle-compatible grapple fixture to allow handling of the payload by the JEM remote manipulator system(JEM-RMS), a robotic arm system used for the transport and positioning of external user payloads. The JEM-RMS has both a main arm and a fine arm for robotics manipulation and is operated by the crew from within the JEM-PM [JEM pressurized module] with the aid of a viewing port.

Sub-Rack Accommodations and EXPRESS Rack. The accommodations for research on ISS [International Space Station] are designed to give a user the option of using what amount to "central facilities" for conducting their research, or developing their own experimental equipment from scratch.... If no central facility meets a given investigator's requirements, they can consider building "investigation-specific" equipment that is unique to their needs. Such equipment will typically be allocated a sub-portion of an ISPR [International Standard Payload Rack] based on a unit of space called a Mid-deck Locker Equivalent(MLE). This unit has dimensions roughly based on the Space Shuttle's Mid-deck Storage Locker(MDL), which has an internal 0. 06 m³(2. 0 ft³) volume and approximate dimensions of 43. 2 cm(17 in) width x 50. 8 cm(20 in) depth x 25. 4 cm(10 in) height. Equiment that is built around the MLE size-concept is typically referred to as a sub-rack payload.

The Payload Operations Control Center at the Marshall Space Flight Center is a NASA facility for monitoring, coordinating and controlling on-orbit operations of Spacelab payloads. It is also used for premission test and training activities. The Payload Operations Control Center allows users on the ground to support and interact with onboard mission activities and permits direct communication between the investigator on the ground and flight crew on orbit. It provides ground command capability to operate experiments, manage payload resources and operate payload support equipment. Its facilities and services for instrument monitoring and control are made available to all users who request them. Each user area has a standard set of support equipment and space for special instrument-dedicated ground support equipment. A communication link can be arranged to allow the investigator to perform some or all operations from his own institution.

Proximity operations... provide capabilities related to supporting safe operations with other vehicles while maintaining a habitable environment and supporting internal and external user payload operations. Vehicle is actively determining and controlling attitude nonpropulsively.

CONT

Numerous proximity operations near the ISS [International Space Station] have been and will be performed. Orbiters will continuously carry astronauts and modules required for the assembly, and the Crew Return Vehicle (CRV) is planned for emergency evacuation. The Automatic Transfer Vehicle (ATV) of the European Space Agency (ESA) will perform regular reboosting and refueling of the ISS. Other vehicles such as Progress, Soyuz and H-II Transfer Vehicle will fly for crew transport, logistics, and resupply. Relative positioning rather than absolute positioning is the major concern for these operations. Better relative accuracy will provide fewer correction burns, thus saving consumables and other operational resources.

The "Microgravity" and "Standard" operational modes are the primary modes for carrying out research activities on the ISS [International Space Station]. These two modes have been specifically defined to optimise the gravity environment of the ISS for user research activities. The Microgravity Mode, as the name suggests, provides the most optimised microgravity environment. The Microgravity Mode has been defined to ensure that : 50% of the International Standard Payload Rack locations within the European Columbus, Destiny and Japanese Kibo laboratories must have quasi-steady state accelerations less than 1 micro-g for at least 30 days continuously, on six occasions each year".

CONT

Mode changes are usually controlled by the ground controller or by on-orbit crew input commands, but the transition to survival mode may be automatically initiated by the ISS.... In the microgravity mode, user payload operations for microgravity research are supported. This mode does include the effects of crew equipment such as exercise devices and latched or hinged enclosures, however crew effects are mitigated to the extent possible.
