USER SPACE [49 fiches]

Fiche 1 2025-03-27

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Simulation (Cybernetic Systems)
  • Collaboration with WIPO
CONT

In particular, [the] system... can provide the user with options for accessing the images, content, virtual objects, and VR [virtual reality] controls using eye gaze, hand gestures, head movements, and/or other user-based movements within the VR space. For example, a user can generate 3D [tridimensional] drawings in portions of the VR space and interact with such drawings using 2D [bidimensional] and 3D input devices, and tools configured to generate artistic drawings or annotations on drawings or other VR objects.

CONT

In an embodiment, the hand ... may start a training session in a semi-closed position, so it has room to open or close. The speed of the movement of [the] hand ... may depend on information provided by kinematic sensors ... For instance, the kinematic sensors ... may provide a proportional control value to regulate the speed of movement of the hand ... In an embodiment, the kinematic sensors ... provide a value between 0 and 1 to the VR [virtual reality] control module ... which reflects the speed of intended hand movement. If the value is closer to 0, the hand movement is correspondingly slow. If the value is closer to 1, the hand movement is correspondingly fast. In another embodiment, the speed of the movement of the hand ... may depend on a measurement of the EMG [electromyographic] signal provided by the user.

OBS

hand gesture; hand movement: data validated by Canadian subject-field experts from École Polytechnique de Montréal, MasterpieceVR and McGill University.

A Web bug, also known as a Web beacon, is a file object (usually a graphic image such as a transparent GIF) that is placed on a Web page or in an e-mail message to monitor user behavior, functioning as a kind of spyware.

OBS

Unlike a cookie, which can be accepted or declined by a browser user, a Web bug arrives as just another GIF on the Web page. A Web bug is typically invisible to the user because it is transparent(matches the color of the page background) and takes up only a tiny amount of space. It can usually only be detected if the user looks at the source version of the page to find a an IMG tag that loads from a different Web server than the rest of the page.

CONT

An anti-bird roosting device for protecting an area, comprising at least a pair of cooperating base elements mounted on the area to be protected, and a plurality of projecting spikes, supported on the base elements and projecting away therefrom into a space above the area to be protected. The spikes are provided in a pattern of interspersed combinations of vertical, obtuse and acute angle-forming projections, in a high spike density that prevents roosting in the protected space. Thus, each point in the area to be protected is defended by more than one spike, each spike coming from a different direction, so as to cross-defend each other, creating a perimeter envelope defense of the air volume surrounding the base elements. Each device is easily and inexpensively prepared as a continuous mesh, whose dimensions can be constructed in standard sizes or in accordance with the needs of the user. The element diameter is typically approximately two millimeters. The small element diameter makes the entire device hard to see from a distance so that it does not detract from the building's aesthetics.

CONT

Porcupine wire, typically marketed as Nixalite, prevents birds from perching and roosting on flat surfaces such as ledges and signs. ... Nixalite is a system of stainless steel strips that feature needle-like wire prongs. The prongs project from a 0.5 centimetre base and come in two lengths - 5 and 9.5 centimetres. Strips are available in either single (90°) or double (180°) radius.

The Global Transmission System(GTS) provides a capability for transmitting highly accurate time and data signals via the space Station external antenna to ground-based users. The data signals can be coded according to the specific user requirements and can include such information as the station orbital position.... The GTS uses a transmitter operating at two dedicated frequencies and mounted externally on the Russian Service Module. The GTS signals are available to ground receivers for periods of 5-12 min several times a day. Although GTS primarily provides a service to ground users, identical services are available to Russian-element users onboard the station.

The accommodations for research on ISS [International Space Station] are designed to give a user the option of using what amount to "central facilities" for conducting their research, or developing their own experimental equipment from scratch.... If no central facility meets a given investigator's requirements, they can consider building "investigation-specific" equipment that is unique to their needs. Such equipment will typically be allocated a sub-portion of an ISPR [International Standard Payload Rack] based on a unit of space called a Mid-deck Locker Equivalent(MLE). This unit has dimensions roughly based on the Space Shuttle's Mid-deck Storage Locker(MDL), which has an internal 0. 06 m³(2. 0 ft³) volume and approximate dimensions of 43. 2 cm(17 in) width x 50. 8 cm(20 in) depth x 25. 4 cm(10 in) height. The "Microgravity" and "Standard" operational modes are the primary modes for carrying out research activities on the ISS [International Space Station]. These two modes have been specifically defined to optimise the gravity environment of the ISS for user research activities. The Microgravity Mode, as the name suggests, provides the most optimised microgravity environment. The Microgravity Mode has been defined to ensure that : 50% of the International Standard Payload Rack locations within the European Columbus, Destiny and Japanese Kibo laboratories must have quasi-steady state accelerations less than 1 micro-g for at least 30 days continuously, on six occasions each year".

The Get Away Special(GAS) Program was initiated by NASA in the mid-seventies to provide a diverse user community with extremely low cost access to space. The GAS carrier consists of a canister(5 ft3) which can accommodate customer equipment in a volume 19. 75 inches in diameter and 28. 25 inches high. The customer equipment can weigh up to 200 lbs. and attaches to the canister top plate. A smaller(2. 5 ft3) canister is also available for 60 and 100 lb. payloads. Electrical connection is via customer supplied cables to the GAS electrical interface on the canister bottom plate. Bumpers on the customer equipment provide lateral support. In hypermedia, sound re-establishes the audio space of conversation, and presents the possibilities of parallel and branching narrative soundtracks, which can be presented graphically so the user can choose between them, switching from one sound-track to another. It then becomes possible to participate in choosing the direction for the evolution of a story, or to access different viewpoints on a particular subject or body of knowledge, or even to choose a preferred language from several foreign language commentaries. "Interactive audio" techniques like these are used within the context of a graphical interface that provides special screen buttons or "icons" on which the user has to click to trigger the audio sequences-so that, for example, clicking on an icon featuring the French tricolour might call up a spoken commentary in French.
