Tandis que l'usage du terme «through bill of lading» persiste dans les milieux anglophones de l'industrie des transports, dans la francophonie, l'usage du terme «connaissement direct» diminue au fur et à mesure que ce document est remplacé par un nouveau titre de transport appelé «document de transport combiné» dont la Chambre de Commerce internationale (CCI) recommande l'emploi depuis 1975, parce que ce dernier est juridiquement plus fiable que le connaissement direct. Cependant, leur nature diffère. Il ne faut pas les confondre.
