In the present literature on ektacytometry small angle light scattering by ellipsoidal red blood cells is commonly approximated by Fraunhofer diffraction. Calculations on a sphere with the size and relative refractive index of a red cell, however, show that Fraunhofer diffraction deviates significantly from exact Mie theory. Anomalous diffraction is found to be a much better approximation. The anomalous diffraction theory is used to calculate the intensity distribution of the light scattered by an allipsoidally deformed red blood cell. The derived expression shows that the ellipticity of isointensity curves in forward scattered light are equal to the ellipticity of the red blood cell. The theoretical expression is fitted to the intensity patterns measured with an ektacytometer. For the small observation angles used in ektacytometry, the experimental results confirm the validity of the anomalous diffraction approach.  2, fiche 1, Anglais, - ektacytometer

The term splicing usually refers to the joining together of two or more series of index numbers, the first on one base, the second on another base and so on. If two different series cover the run between them and provided that they have at least one period in common, then they can be spliced together by equating them in a common period. We describe the theoretical basis and practical details of a method for creating parametric images of the ratio of regional cerebral blood flow(rCBF) to volume(rCBV) from planar gamma-camera images following intravenous injection of any intravascular tracer and after correction for dispersion of the bolus before it arrives at the head. This ratio, which is the most sensitive index of the extent to which perfusion is being maintained by vasodilatation in patients with cerebro-vascular disease, indicates whether the limits of compensation have been, or are in danger of being, exceeded and identifies any ischaemic penumbra. Evidence is provided of the validity of the correction and the accuracy of calculation of the ratio. The range of normal values established is not significantly different from that previously reported using positron emission tomography. This technique has proved sufficiently sensitive to be clinically useful in patients with abnormalities of cerebral perfusion.  1, fiche 3, Anglais, - ischaemic%20penumbra
