A simple valve consisting of a tapered plug pierced with a hole through which liquid is able to flow.

CONT

There are two principal objections to the plug valve: One arises from the possible water hammer that may result from too quick manipulation of the valve. The other is the difficulty resulting when the key becomes worn; the valve may leak or jam and it is difficult to make repairs.

OBS

Rotation of the plug through 90° shuts off the flow by blocking it with the undrilled part of the plug.

[A] type of canister that sprays an aerosol.

CONT

This type of spray can is a canister containing liquid under pressure from pressurized vapor in equilibrium with another liquid, which often also dissolves the payload. When the can's valve is opened, the liquid is forced out of a small hole and emerges as an aerosol or mist. As gas expands to drive out the payload, some propellant evaporates inside the can to maintain an even pressure. Outside the can, the droplets of propellant evaporate rapidly, leaving the payload suspended as very fine particles or droplets.

A method... for breaking down coal by compressed air. Air at a pressure of 10, 000 to 12, 000 pounds per square inch is conveyed in a steel pipe to a tube or shell inserted in a shothole. The air is admitted by opening a shooting valve and is released in the hole by the rupture of a shear pin or disc. The sudden expansion of the air in the confined hole breaks down the coal.
