A circular disc fixed on a revolving shaft, some distance out of centre, working freely in a ring (the eccentric strap), which is attached to a rod called an eccentric rod, by means of which the rotating motion of the shaft is converted into a backward-and-forward motion.

Because an eccentric can be attached anywhere along a shaft it is unnecessary to form any part of the shaft into a crank. Eccentrics are seldom used to transmit large forces because friction loss would be high; they are commonly used to drive the valve gears of engines.

A valve which controls pressure, volume, or flow direction in a fluid transmission system.

Pneumatic systems are often compared to hydraulic systems, but such comparisons can only hold true in general terms.... Control valves are... a necessary part of a typical pneumatic system.... The control valve consists of a lever with two lobes. [In the off position], a spring holds the left poppet closed so that compressed air entering the pressure port cannot flow to the brakes. [In the on position], one lobe of the lever holds the left poppet open and a spring closes the right poppet. Compressed air now flows around the opened left poppet, through a drilled passage, and into a chamber below the right poppet. Since the right poppet is closed, the high-pressure air flows out of the brake port and into the brake line to apply the brakes. To release the brakes, the control valve is returned to the off position.

A vacuum-splint provides a quick form-fitting limb and/or spine immobilization during rescue and transportation to medical facilities.... When the valve is open, internal pressure is equal to atmospheric pressure allowing the device to be wrapped around the body part to be immobilized. Next, a hand vacuum pump is attached to the valve and a vacuum is created. This brings the walls of the device down on polystyrene beads internally which compress and form fit to whatever it is initially wrapped around. At the same time it becomes extremely rigid and can no longer be manipulated until the valve is open again allowing internal pressure to return allowing removal of the device.

A pulley elbow is a device that contains a ball bearing sheave(pulley) which guides stainless steel cable 90 degrees around the sheave. It is defined as a device used to change direction for stainless steel wire cable, which is housed in conduit and is used to connect to a cable operated manual pull station, a mechanical gas valve, and/or the fusible link detection, from the Ansul AUTOMAN Regulated Release Mechanism. It is used because bending conduit results in too much friction loss in the movement of the cable in the conduit. There are two types of pulley elbows. Part No. 415670 has socket ends with set screws for ½ in. conduit, and Part No. 423250 has compression ring ends also for ½ in. conduit. The blower pressure switch contact closes, completing the interlock circuit between terminals 3 and P when blower pressure reaches 16 in. water column. Terminal X is powered to position the choke valve in its high fire position, with the high fire interlock satisfied via a jumper between terminals 3 and 10.(It is noted that the choke valve is normally open during this part of the sequence due to the way the valve motor is connected to the controller). The programmed sequence is now initiated. The Blower and Purge LED indicators on the Fireye controller will light.

A liquid filling technique which uses gravity in a vacuum atmosphere.

Pressure gravity. This method fills to a level. It is almost universally restricted to filling carbonated beverages. The flow principle is gravity as the force causing flow into the container. Like the gravity vacuum method, which fills by gravity in a vacuum atmosphere, this method fills by gravity in a pressure atmosphere. Product under pressure is held in an integral overhead supply tank on the rotary. Filling valves are mounted in the tank and are opened against spring pressure by the container being lifted to the valve. When the container is sealed to the valve, a mechanical latch opens a charging valve at the top of the valve vent tube which is above the product level in the supply tank.... Fill level is determined when the rising liquid covers a part in the vent tube through which the air in the container is exhausted as product flows in.

Selon nous, le terme anglais «capsule» se rapporte ici à l'enveloppe renfermant le savon du distributeur et le terme «valve» , quant à lui, se rapporte au dispositif qui permet de permettre ou de bloquer le passage du savon. Le terme le plus générique et le plus juste en français est probablement «obturateur». On le retrouve comme élément descriptif de «soupape» et de «robinet-vanne» (ci-après).
