... Winefordner et al. described a special, more sensitive cell based on changes in dielectric constant and constructed to allow gas flow between the plates of a capacitor which is a part of the tank circuit of a 70-Mc/sec Clapp oscillator, the output of which is beat against that of a reference oscillator. A variety of optically pumped alkali vapor scalar magnetometers have been used in space. Casium 133, Rubidium 85 and Rubidium 87 has been employed in sensors... In the Rubidium self-oscillating magnetometer a light from a Rubidium lamp is passed through a filter that only passes the 7948 Angstrom Rubidium light. The detector cell consisted of two circular plates. One was a 0. 0005-in nickel foil disk functioning as the sensor plate; the other, a 0. 002-in. gold foil disk, is called the vibrating plate. The gold disk is vibrated at 12 cps to produce alternating current readings for the oscilloscope, whereas the nickel sensor is thermically cycled by current surges.
