... Winefordner et al. described a special, more sensitive cell based on changes in dielectric constant and constructed to allow gas flow between the plates of a capacitor which is a part of the tank circuit of a 70-Mc/sec Clapp oscillator, the output of which is beat against that of a reference oscillator. A particularly sensitive and accurate type of hygrometer has been developed in recent years by the Instrument Division of the U. S. Weather Bureau. The device, known as the infrared hygrometer, employs a beam of infrared light projected through the air to a photo-electric detector. Two separate wave lengths of light are used; one is absorbed by water vapor and the other passes through undiminished. As a means of exciting noble gases at atmospheric pressures, Lovelock developed a spark device of high sensitivity, capable of detecting as little as 10^{minus 13} mole of most organic materials. The detector consisted of a spark gap made of platinum wire sealed in a glass tube. The voltage across the 5-10 mm spark gap is measured with an electrostatic voltmeter. Semiconductive Thin Film Detector. Using the known principle that the adsorption and desorption of gases cause a change in electrical conductivity of semiconductors, Seiyama et al. developed a new chromatographic detector for gaseous components.... The current, depending upon the resistance of the film, is converted to voltage by the variable resistance, which is fed without amplification to a recorder. Resistance also adjusts the input voltage of the recorder at desired sensitivity. Using zinc oxide as an example of a typical film material, the conductivity of its film maintains a fixed value when the nitrogen carrier gas is passed at a constant flow rate throught the borosilicate glass tube. Lovelock developed a small detector intended for use with open tubular columns, and a new triode detector having a sensitivity 1000 times greater than his original detector... The triode detector... incorporates a ring electrode, in addition to the normal anode and cathode electrodes, which separates the background current(positive ions liberated by vapor/metastable argon reactions or collisions) of the primary electron stream from the signal current. This increase in electrical conductivity resulted from the release of sodium vapor from the probe.
