A thermal vacuum test on the first flight vehicle of the H-II Transfer Vehicle(HTV) has been carried out at the Spacecraft Integration and Test Building at the Tsukuba Space Center. The purpose of the test is to evaluate the thermal design of the structure and to verify its endurance in the harsh environment of space by stimulating the vacuum and thermal environment in space. UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] can be broken down into three major families. The HALE(high altitude long endurance) aircraft are for high altitude observation or for use as telecommunication relays.... Called MALE(medium altitude long endurance), the other type of UAVs are aircraft similar to those used for military missions. CMC Blisk Material Development and Testing. Engineers at MSFC are developing fabrication processes and designs for ceramic matrix composite(CMC) components through material and component testing, structural modeling, microscopy, and nondestructive analysis techniques. CMCs will be utilized extensively on future generation launch vehicles for propulsion systems and for vehicle hot structure. They are necessary to enable lightweight components capable of operating over a wide temperature range. These advantages translate into increased safety and lower cost compared to state-of-the-art materials. MSFC is primarily responsible for developing CMCs and transitioning them into propulsion applications such as cooled and radiation cooled flow paths, thrust chambers, integrally bladed disks(blisks) and nozzles. The new 60-megawatt segmented arc heater, known as H3, significantly improves AEDC' s [Arnold Engineering Development Center] present arc capabilities... Arc heaters such as H3 produce the high pressures and heat fluxes required for testing thermal protection materials used for nose tips and heat shields. Arc heater tests provide information to manufacturers about the probable condition a space vehicle component would experience following re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. An arc heater is basically a large tube that high-pressure air runs through. The air is heated by discharging tens of megawatts of power using an electric arc similar to a lightning bolt. At the nozzle, or downstream end of the heater, test personnel install models or materials and subject them to simulated high pressure and temperature conditions generated by the bolt. Immediately after landing, the orbiter is towed to the Orbiter processing Facility(OPF) located west of the Vehicle Assembly Building(VAB). The orbiter then undergoes safing procedures in the OPF which include removing residual fuels and explosive ordnance items. Then the orbiter's previous mission payloads are removed and the vehicle is fully inspected, tested, and refurbished for its next mission. These functions require approximately two-thirds of the time between missions. The remainder is devoted to the installation and checkout of the payload for the next mission.
