There are two broad types of particle-beam weapons: the charged-particle beam weapon and the neutral-particle beam weapon. The charged-particle variety would be developed for use within the atmosphere (endoatmospheric) and has a set of technological characteristics that are entirely different from the neutral-particle beam weapon that would be used in space (exoatmospheric).

Once the thermal velocity of electrons exceeds their "escape velocity" from atoms, the electrons break loose from their orbits and roam free. The presence of freely moving electrons is the defining characteristic of a plasma.... when... the temperatures are so high that atoms are torn apart into charged nuclei and free electrons, their ability to radiate light is much enhanced. Thus plasma glows.

The origin of the Electromotive Force responsible for field aligned currents in auroral arcs can be the electrostatic potential difference existing at the interface between an earthward moving hot plasmasheet cloud, containing energetic electrons and ions, and the colder plasma in the plasma through. This thermoelectric potential difference results from electronic pressure gradients and velocity shears across the interface boundary/sheath between the hot and cold plasma regions.

These contradictions in 19th century physics were resolved by the special theory of relativity. The old physics was unable to explain the phenomenon of radioactivity.
