A lot of the noise comes from the rattling and creaking of fans and events. Student Activity : Acquire a large, clean empty cardboard box(top or bottom removed), big enough to fit easily and comfortably over a person's head, leaving ample room for ventilation. Sit the box on the floor or table, open side down, and tap or scratch lightly on the outside of the box using only your hands. Next, place the box over your head and repeat the procedure. Comment on the loudness of the sounds you hear. Relate this to conditions inside the International Space Station. Student Challenge : Acquire a simple, inexpensive household fan. Develop a method to reduce the amount of noise produced by the fan without reducing the airflow.

Activité de l'élève : Prenez une grande boîte de carton propre et vide (parties supérieure et inférieure enlevées) et dont les dimensions sont suffisamment grandes pour pouvoir y passer la tête et laisser amplement de place pour la ventilation. NDHQ 97 is the largest accommodation project ever undertaken by the Department of National Defence or the government. It's more than just moving people from building to building. It's refitting buildings and general office space, using a new design concept called the universal footprint. It's adapting accommodation to re-engineered organizations. It's also purchasing and installing furniture best suited to a modern, dynamic organization. The headquarters will have a new look. In the four buildings... corridors will run along the windows. Offices will be clustered at the centre of each floor. Major traffic will flow outside work areas, not through them. People working in teams will have work areas designed for teams. Offices will have more natural light, better air conditioning and better ventilation. Some screens will have glazed windows to allow natural light to spill through. Each workstation will include large, well-lit work surfaces for computers and overall, will have more usable workspace. Plenty of storage space will be located above and below work surfaces. But employees will be encouraged to make the most of their space by storing information on diskette, rather than in filing cabinets. The look will be cleaner and less cluttered. And whether people are tall or short, they’ll be able to adjust their desks, chairs and computers to the height that's right for them.

QGDN 97 est le plus gros projet d'aménagement de locaux entrepris par le ministère de la Défense nationale ou le gouvernement. Il ne s'agit pas seulement de déménager des gens d'un édifice à un autre, mais plutôt de réorganiser les édifices et l'espace disponible en appliquant un nouveau concept d'aménagement appelé plan universel, d'adapter les locaux à des organisations restructurées, d'acheter et d'installer de l'ameublement qui convient mieux à une organisation moderne et dynamique. Le quartier général aura une nouvelle allure. Dans les quatre édifices [...] les couloirs vont longer les fenêtres, et les bureaux seront regroupés au centre de chaque étage. Le gros de la circulation se fera à l'extérieur des aires de travail, et non à travers celles-ci. Les gens qui travaillent en équipe auront des locaux conçus spécialement pour les équipes. Il y aura davantage de lumière naturelle dans les bureaux, et la climatisation ainsi que la ventilation seront meilleures. Certaines cloisons auront des fenêtres vitrées pour permettre la diffusion de la lumière naturelle. Chaque poste de travail comprendra de grandes surfaces bien éclairées pour les ordinateurs et offriront, dans l'ensemble, un plus grand espace utilisable. Il y aura en outre beaucoup de rangement au-dessus et au-dessous des surfaces de travail. Les employés seront toutefois encouragés à maximiser leur espace en emmagasinant l'information sur disquette plutôt que dans des classeurs. Les locaux auront ainsi l'air plus propres et plus dégagés. Peu importe la taille des occupants, les bureaux, les chaises, et les ordinateurs pourront être réglés à la bonne hauteur.

Enclosure hoods are designed to enclose the emission source. Examples of enclosure hoods include paint spray booths, laboratory hoods, belt conveyor enclosures, bin or hopper enclosures and abrasive blasting cabinets. These hoods allow contaminants to disperse within the enclosed space, but prevent stray air currents from carrying the contaminant into the work area. The dispersed contaminants are subsequently withdrawn from the enclosure by exhaust ventilation.

Enclosure hoods can be designed to completely seal the emission source (total enclosure) or to allow access to the interior of the enclosure (partial enclosure). In theory, there is no need for exhaust ventilation in total enclosures.
