Chytridiomycosis is an infectious disease that affects amphibians worldwide. It is caused by the chytrid fungus(Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis), a fungus capable of causing sporadic deaths in some amphibian populations and 100 per cent mortality in others.... Only the amphibian chytrid fungus is known to infect vertebrate species. Individual frogs are thought to contract the disease when their skin comes into contact with water containing spores from infected animals.

Conenose, or kissing bugs(Triatoma sp.)... feed exclusively on the blood of vertebrate animals. Although generally rare, they are most common around animal nests or pet resting areas, emerging at night to search for blood meal. Their bites are gentle and painless, and usually occur while the victim is asleep. They are generally unable to bite through clothing. On humans, blood meals are sometimes taken from the tender areas of the face(hence the name "kissing bug").

Immune system of invertebrate species therefore seems to operate in a distinct manner from that of vertebrate species. Using an evolutionary model in which organisms struggle to fight infections, we attempt to understand why some species use a more diverse set of antigen receptors than others. Individuals in our model either use somatic DNA recombination to produce antigen receptors(as in vertebrates) or does not use such mechanism(as in invertebrates). We found that individuals having an invertebrate-like immune system came to employ only a few antigen receptors to recognize a set of pathogens whereas these with vertebrate-like immune system use a larger set of more specific antigen receptors to recognize the same set of pathogens.

Pratiquement tous les Crocodiliens fossiles du Jurassique inférieur et moyen proviennent non pas de roches continentales mais de sédiments marins déposés dans les mers peu profondes qui avaient alors envahi de vastes parties des continents. Les plus anciens de ces Crocodiliens jurassiques, membres du sous-ordre des Mésosuchiens, furent parmi les premiers vertébrés fossiles à être étudiés scientifiquement. On trouva en effet des représentants de la famille des Téléosauridés en assez grand nombre dans la Jurassique d'Angleterre, de France et d'Allemagne, dès le XVIIIe siècle.

Practically all the crocodilians from Lower and Middle Jurassic fossil beds are found not in continental rocks but in marine ones, laid down in the shallow seas that had invaded large continental areas at the time. The earliest of the Jurassic crocodilians, members of the suborder Mesochia, were among the first vertebrate fossils known to science. Representatives of the family of teleosaurids, they were found in some abundance in rock formations in Britain, France and Germany as early as the 18th century.
