The minimum concentration of oxygen in a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen that will just support flaming combustion of a material under specified test conditions.

CONT

LOI is defined as the minimum volume concentration of oxygen in a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen that will just support sustained combustion of the material when ignited in a vertical position at its uppermost edge. Cotton fabrics, for example, have a LOI of 17 percent which means that if the oxygen is reduced below 17 percent the cotton will not continue to burn after the ignition source is removed. The higher the LOI of a fabric, the greater the probability that it will cease to burn once the ignition source is removed.

While searching for debris from nuclear bomb tests, Christian Junge discovered in 1960 a layer of microscopic aerosol particles between the tropopause and about 18 miles (30 km) altitude. These particles are composed of sulfuric acid and water and are formed by the chemical transformation of sulfur-containing gases. This layer is called the Junge Layer or the Stratospheric Aerosol Layer.

The relative maximum of the global vertical aerosol concentration profile in the lower stratosphere is commonly referred to as the Junge aerosol layer, or simply the Junge layer. It is of great importance to study the formation of this layer and to monitor its changes because of the possible impacts of these stratospheric aerosols to global climate. At present, the formation mechanism of the Junge layer is not well understood. Current theories of Junge layer formation include the injection of sulfate particles by volcanic eruptions, turbulent diffusion of tropospheric sulfates, natural(biogenic) emissions of carbonyl sulfide, and other processes.

A method for estimating the rate at which sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere can react with solid surfaces.

[In this method] lead dioxide [sic : lead(IV) dioxide] of specified reactivity is spread on a linen surface in a standard way, and the linen wrapped round a vertical porcelain cylinder and exposed to the air in a screen. At the end of a month the amount of lead sulfate produced is determined. The rate of reaction depends on the concentration of sulfur dioxide in the air, the wind speed, and the humidity.

Toutefois, avec l'accroissement des puissances d'émission on observe parfois, en atmosphère neutre surmontée d'une inversion, des arrivées de panache au sol même, à proche distance de la cheminée, pendant des durées non négligeables, et d'autant plus dangereuses que les puissances d'émission sont alors considérables.
