Utilising a generally circular shape together with a control regime which scans for the best direction of escape after the robot has become stuck(say in a corner) is especially advantageous. Furthermore, it may be additionally advantageous to detect the angle of any collision, in order to optimise the robots subsequent angle of movement away from the obstacle.

Gyroscopes can be used as devices for direction finding, guidance, and control. If a gyroscope, mounted on its gimbal rings, is set spinning about a horizontal axis, and the outer gimbal ring is rotated in a horizontal plane, then the inner gimbal ring, carrying the flywheel, tilts up out of the horizontal plane in which it, too first lay. During the first phase of rapid align, the liquid level signal controls the platform pitch erection. However... to avoid a large vertical error when the control of the platform pitch gimbal switches to the pitch pick-off in the second phase of rapid alignment, a phase reversal is required. The phase reversal is designed to keep all of the signal phasing correct while reversing the phase of the gyro pick-off signal. If the phase of the gyro pick-off were not reversed, the combined signals could null with a non-level gimbal and a non-vertical gyro spin axis. With the pick-off reversal, the same type of cancellation occurs but the gyro spin axis is vertical.
