A cutter-loader designed for continuous mining taking a medium web of 2 ft 6 in.

It consists of a cutter section with horizontal and vertical jibs and gummer to which is attached a loading chute or plough which turns the cut coal on to the conveyor alongside. To reverse the direction of cutting, the vertical shearing jibs are swung round from one side of the horizontal jibs to the other, and reversal of the horizontal cutter chain is by means of the reversible motor-the chains being provided with double-pointed picks. The minimum height at which the machine can cut is 2 ft 8 in.

A cutter-loader for continuous mining in longwall faces.

Its main cutting unit is the trepanner wheel with cutting arms, one at each end of the machine to enable it to cut in both directions on the face. Also fitted are a vertical, back-shearing jib, a floor-cutting jib, duplicated to enable cutting in either direction and, if necessary, a roof-cutting disc. The machine is used in conjunction with an armoured flexible conveyor on a prop-free-front face; suitable for seams between 3 and 4 ft thick, though it can work in thicker seams if the top coal falls freely.

Grain and Feed Bins and Pits. Grain bins are similar to silos except they are usually shorter, wider and made of galvanized steel. They are used to store small grains, and can be fitted with dryers to remove moisture from the grain. Grain pits are less common on the farm. A grain pit is a recess in the ground made of concrete, steel or both. They are covered with a metal grate that allows vehicles to drive over the top and dump grain through the grate into the pit. Grain is usually removed from the pit by an auger conveyor or a high-speed vertical bucket conveyor called a grain leg. Both of these types of structures create a number of specific hazards.

Au premier abord il ne semble pas nécessaire de posséder un moyen de réception rapide des grains. Il existe en effet des vis élévatrices munies d'une trémie de réception. Leur débit est assez lent et il faut tenir compte de l'organisation du chantier de récolte qui ne doit souffrir aucun retard, ou de la durée de livraison par camion qui doit être la plus courte possible. Le meilleur moyen pour arriver à satisfaire ces deux exigences est de disposer d'une trémie creusée dans le sol, dans laquelle les véhicules de livraison viennent vider rapidement leur chargement. De plus il peut arriver que des pannes dans l'installation arrêtent les moyens de manutention. La capacité de la fosse est alors employée comme tampon pour recevoir du grain pendant un certain temps.

A longwall cutter-loader of the plough type, with two cutting blades, one at each end, operated by a hydraulic cylinder which can give a powerful thrust(about 42 tons) to the blades and cause them to bite into the coal. While this thrust is being exerted, the machine is anchored by means of a vertical jack which engages the roof and floor. The jack is built on sliding bars and the machine is moved by sliding the jack along the bars to the next position for anchoring the machine. It travels alongside the conveyor but is not connected to it. A loading ramp guides the cut coal on to the conveyor. The machine is employed in seams from 4 to 5 ft thick with a strong roof and floor.

La firme Mavor et Coulson construit une machine appelée Samson stripper qui abat le charbon par arrachement d'un copeau épais (environ 60 cm) chargé directement dans le convoyeur de taille. La machine est automotrice. Elle comprend un moteur qui entraîne une pompe à huile agissant sur une unité de propulsion. Celle-ci est formée d'un étançon vertical à double effet qui coince la machine entre mur et toit et d'un cylindre horizontal muni d'un piston également à double effet. Le piston horizontal porte, à chacune de ses extrémités, un coin d'attaque qui peut exercer sur le massif une pression de 42 t. La réaction est supportée par l'étançon vertical. La tête coupante peut ainsi pénétrer de 80 cm dans le massif. On desserre ensuite l'étançon de sorte que le bâti de la machine repose de tout son poids sur le mur et que l'unité de propulsion devient libre de glisser de 80 cm afin de se préparer à effectuer un nouveau cycle d'avancement.

A cutter-loader based on the plough principle and designed to cut coal which is too hard for the ordinary plough. Two vertical blades, fitted one at each end of the machine, carry cutting picks which shear the coal from the face by an oscillating motion. The machine is hauled backward and forward along the face by a chain haulage mounted on the tail end of the conveyor. The conveyor and slicer are held up to the coal by pneumatic rams spaced along the goaf side of the conveyor. The sheared coal is forced from the face by the wedge shape of the machine and is loaded on to the armoured conveyor by means of specially shaped ramps. The machine has been designed for seams with a minimum thickness of 4 ft and has a maximum cutting depth of 14 in.

Le rabot activé. La firme anglaise Huwood construit un rabot activé dont les pics, animés d'un mouvement de translation, frappent le massif à la manière de l'aiguille d'un marteau piqueur. L'appareil est alimenté à la fois en courant et en air comprimé. Plusieurs versions en ont été réalisées. Malgré de sérieuses difficultés, il est possible qu'il y ait là une voie intéressante.

A machine for packaging dry products, such as biscuits and crackers, based on the bag-in-box concept.

When the bag-in-box concept is applied to dry products, it generally involves a bag inside a folding carton.... The evolutionary process eventually culminated in two basic methods of producing lined cartons. The first was a machine to automatically open a magazine-fed side-seamed carton and elevate it around vertically indexed mandrels where glue is applied to the bottom flaps and folded up against the end of the mandrel with great pressure.... [A]... lining machine... plunges a precut waxed-paper sheet into it by a system of reciprocating vertical mandrels.... The second method involves the use of a double package maker(DPM) which combines the carton forming/gluing operation with a lining feed mechanism which wraps the lining paper around a solid mandrel prior to the carton feed station. In this instance the carton blank is flat and side-seamed on the DPM. The lined carton is then discharged upright onto a conveyor leading to the filler and top closing machine.

As with the horizontal case packers, the product is delivered to the machine infeed conveyor from upstream filling equipment to the accumulator section.... When all lanes are filled in the accumulator area, a formed corrugated case is positioned underneath the loading mechanism ready for depositing. At that point, retractable shifter plates in the accumulator area move out allowing the containers to drop vertically through fingers into the cells of the case...
