A derrick crane with the top of the mast held by means of guy ropes.

The guy derrick is made up of a boom and a mast that are connected at the top by a cable which allows the boom to be raised or lowered. The mast, which is longer than the boom, is held firmly in a vertical position by guys, although the derrick, as a whole, may rotate through a horizontal angle of 360 degrees. The load is applied to the boom by means of another cable, which may be used to raise or lower the load without moving the boom in a vertical plane. This type [of derrick] is used in the erection of large, steel building frames.

En dessin d'architecture et de bâtiment, l'élévation est la projection de la façade - sans que celle-ci soit spécialement façade principale - sur un plan vertical extérieur. Il est le plus souvent nécessaire de représenter plusieurs élévations du bâtiment (une pour chaque façade), afin de donner une description complète de l'ensemble. On appelle également ces élévations «plans relevés». L'élévation est la représentation de la construction telle qu'elle est, ou sera, au dessus de la ligne de terre, en vue extérieure seule.

On trouve parfois - surtout dans les ouvrages sur le dessin d'art et également chez Littré - le terme «coupe» employé pour qualifier l'élévation. Cet usage ne peut que créer des confusions.

Une certaine confusion règne autour des termes «élévation» et «façade»; pour certains «élévation» désigne les dessins en élévation autant des murs intérieurs qu'extérieurs alors que pour d'autres «élévation» est synonyme de «façade» et ne désigne alors que les murs extérieurs vus en élévation. Pour éviter la confusion il semble souhaitable d'utiliser «élévation» pour le dessin des murs extérieurs et intérieurs et de réserver le terme «façade» au dessin des murs extérieurs seulement.

A rotation anemometer in which the axis of rotation is horizontal.

CONT

[The] windmill anemometer [is] an anemometer in which a windmill is driven by the air stream, and its rotation is transmitted through gearing to dials or other recording mechanism. In some instruments, the rotating vanes and dials are in the same plane; i. e., both vertical, while in others the dial is horizontal. In the windmill type, the operation of air measurement involves readings of dials at the beginning and end of a measured period. Windmill instruments may be fitted with an extension handle, providing a form of remote control; used to measure air speed in an otherwise inaccessible spot.

OBS

The [windmill anemometer] has either flat vanes (as in the air meter) or helicoidal vanes (as in the propeller anemometer). The relation between wind speed and angular rotation is almost linear.

Le radar imageur à antenne réelle acquiert les lignes de l'image indépendamment les unes des autres : chacune d'elle est l'écho d'un faisceau qui se trouve dans un plan vertical perpendiculaire à la vitesse, mais qui est affecté par les mouvements de tangage et de lacet (le roulis n'a pas d'effet car il ne modifie pas la distance mesurée).
