The mission shall include a mode of operation that will allow a 250-500 km swath to be imaged continuously with a spatial resolution of at least 100 m. This mode must be a dual-polarization (HH/VV) mode.

RADARSAT-2 will be capable of transmitting horizontal(H) and vertical(V) polarizations and, depending on the selected mode, the sensor will receive either H or V signals or both of the signals simultaneously. Therefore, in addition to providing complete RADARSAT-1 continuity, RADARSAT-2 will generate products with VV polarization, cross-polarization(HV or VH), dual-polarization(HH+HV or VV+VH) or quad-polarization(HH+VV+HV+VH) over a range of spatial resolutions. This will allow the end-users to select the combination that is best for their specific application.

RADARSAT-2 générera des produits co-polarisés verticalement (VV), en polarisation croisée (HV ou VH), en double polarisation (HH+HV ou VV+VH) ou en quadruple polarisation (HH+VV+HV+VH), et ce, avec une variété de résolutions spatiales. Ceci permettra aux utilisateurs de choisir la meilleure combinaison possible afin de répondre adéquatement à leurs besoins. Chaque signal reçu par le capteur (HH, VV, HV ou VH) possède une sensibilité particulière à diverses caractéristiques ou propriétés de surface, ce qui améliore la discrimination entre les surfaces. De plus, les données multi-polarisées peuvent être utilisées pour générer les signatures polarimétriques des éléments de surface; une information importante pour la caractérisation des mécanismes de rétrodiffusion du signal radar. Les données multi-polarisées seront donc très utiles pour résoudre les ambiguïtés au sujet des surfaces observées.

Polarization of the radar signal is the orientation of the electromagnetic field and is a factor in the way in which the radar signal interacts with ground objects and the resulting energy reflected back. Most radar imaging sensors are designed to transmit microwave radiation either horizontally polarized (H) or vertically polarized (V), and receive either the horizontally or vertically polarized backscattered energy.

Polarimetric radars, like RADARDAT-2, are able to transmit and receive both horizontal and vertical polarizations. With this configuration, four linearly polarized signals are measured coherently in the scattering matrix : HH, HV, VH, and VV. Consequently, the user can derive additional information about the target to aid in the analysis.

La polarisation représente la mesure de l'orientation du plan d'oscillation du signal radar, déterminée par l'antenne du radar. En effet, l'antenne d'un radar peut être ajustée de façon différente à l'émission et à la réception du signal. Les radars utilisés en télédétection sont habituellement conçus pour transmettre un signal polarisé soit horizontalement, soit verticalement. De même, le radar peut recevoir un signal polarisé dans le plan horizontal, dans le plan vertical ou encore dans les deux plans. On désigne habituellement le plan horizontal par la lettre H et le plan vertical par la lettre V. Une image radar peut donc représenter un signal HH (transmission horizontale, réception horizontale), VV (transmission verticale, réception verticale), HV (transmission horizontale, réception verticale) ou vice versa.

RADARSAT-2 est conçu pour transmettre alternativement un signal H et un signal V de même que pour recevoir simultanément ces signaux, créant ainsi des données polarimétriques. Cette particularité permet au capteur de générer des images dans une variété de polarisations (HH, VV, HV et VH). Les données radars en polarisation parallèle ou croisée présentent des caractéristiques spécifiques liées aux propriétés des surfaces observées. Il est donc possible d'accentuer certaines propriétés de surfaces, telles l'humidité ou la rugosité du sol, en choisissant la polarisation appropriée ou encore en combinant diverses polarisations.

Envisat's ASAR [Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar] instrument is the first permanent spaceborne radar to incorporate dual-polarisation capabilities-the instrument can transmit and receive signals in either horizontal or vertical polarisation. This Alternating Polarisation(AP) mode can improve the capability of a SAR instrument to classify different types of terrain. Because the reflective properties of a surface are dependant on the polarisation of the incoming radar signal, the use of more than one type of polarisation provides valuable extra information. The ASAR AP mode provides two simultaneous images(or channels) of the same scene taken with different radar polarisation options. Since the radar can transmit and receive in both the horizontal(H) and vertical(V) polarisations, researchers can create image pairs, with possible combinations, HH&VV... HH&HV and VV&VH. A cross-polarisation option employs a channel in which the polarisation signal transmitted by the spacecraft is received on a different polarisation, i. e. transmitted using a horizontal polarisation and received on the vertical for an HV combination, or the reverse for a VH combination.

The behaviour of the ionosphere and HF [High Frequency] wave propagation parameters and their possible changes can be described using ionospheric oblique sounding (IOS) data. With the help of this method the maximum observed frequency (MOF), the maximum useable frequency (MUF), the lowest observed frequency (LOF), the number of propagation modes and the signal delays can be determined.

The changing state of the ionosphere is generally monitored by networks of vertical ionosondes. These radars transmit and receive HF(1-30MHz) radio waves to and from the ionosphere directly above the monitoring station. The result is real-time information on the state of the ionosphere needed by communications users allowing them to adapt their operational systems accordingly. The oblique ionospheric sounder extends this idea. The transmitter and receiver of the oblique sounder are not co-located like the vertical but are generally hundreds thousands of kilometres apart. So the instrument is able to study how the radio signals of real communications(below 30MHz) propagate via the ionosphere under a variety of conditions. However the interpretation of the oblique propagation is also significantly harder than the case of the vertical.

The Double Arch Downfired, or W Flame Furnace... is the proven way to efficiently self-combust anthracites in Central Station steam generators.... FW Ball Mills receive coal on each end, from bins and feeders located overhead... Primary air coming from air heaters enters each mill end and dries the coal. Once the coal is ground and classified, the air pneumatically transports it towards the arch cyclone burners... A "W" shaped flame forms in the lower furnace(volume below the arches). Gases then continue their upward move through the conventional upper furnace. In the FW arch fired technology, only a fraction of the air enters the furnace through the arch; the bulk of the air is fed to the furnace through slots in the vertical walls located directly below the arches.
