Pilot fish,(Naucrates ductor), widely distributed marine fish of the family Carangidae(order Perciformes). Members of the species are found in the open sea throughout warm and tropical waters.... The pilot fish is elongated and has a forked tail, a lengthwise keel on each side of the tail base, and a low first dorsal fin. It grows to a length of about 60 cm(2 feet) but is usually about 35 cm long. It is distinctively marked with five to seven vertical, dark bands on a bluish body. The pilot fish is carnivorous and follows sharks and ships apparently to feed on parasites and leftover scraps of food.

The fenestron, [like] a conventional tail rotor, [features] spinning blades that generate a thrust force to cancel out the tendency of a helicopter fuselage to rotate. However, the fenestron rotor differs from a conventional rotor by adding several more blades.... Compared to conventional tail rotor blades, the fenestron blades are also much smaller and spin at higher speeds. Furthermore, these blades are mounted within a shroud that forms part of the vertical tail fin of the helicopter. This configuration turns the rotor into a ducted fan whose blade tips are protected from the external air.

Un fenestron est une cavité carénée hébergeant le rotor anticouple de queue d'un hélicoptère. Les rotors de queue conventionnels ont de 2 à 4 pales. Les rotors de queue dans des fenestrons ont de 8 à 18 pales de taille plus réduite. Elles ont des angles d'incidence différents qui font que le bruit est réparti sur différentes fréquences et de ce fait est moins intense. Le fenestron permet une vitesse de rotation supérieure.

Comme sur tous les hélicoptères qui en sont équipés, le fenestron est avant tout un équipement qui participe à l'amélioration de la sécurité de l’appareil et de ses opérateurs. En carénant le rotor anticouple, on le protège des risques de collision au sol tout en évitant les accidents qui peuvent concerner les personnels au sol. [...] Même en cas de destruction ou de panne du rotor anticouple lui-même pendant le vol, les propriétés aérodynamiques du carénage du fenestron apporteraient une sécurité additionnelle.

A cutter-loader based on the plough principle and designed to cut coal which is too hard for the ordinary plough. Two vertical blades, fitted one at each end of the machine, carry cutting picks which shear the coal from the face by an oscillating motion. The machine is hauled backward and forward along the face by a chain haulage mounted on the tail end of the conveyor. The conveyor and slicer are held up to the coal by pneumatic rams spaced along the goaf side of the conveyor. The sheared coal is forced from the face by the wedge shape of the machine and is loaded on to the armoured conveyor by means of specially shaped ramps. The machine has been designed for seams with a minimum thickness of 4 ft and has a maximum cutting depth of 14 in.

Le rabot activé. La firme anglaise Huwood construit un rabot activé dont les pics, animés d'un mouvement de translation, frappent le massif à la manière de l'aiguille d'un marteau piqueur. L'appareil est alimenté à la fois en courant et en air comprimé. Plusieurs versions en ont été réalisées. Malgré de sérieuses difficultés, il est possible qu'il y ait là une voie intéressante.
