A mesocyclone is a vortex of air, approximately 2 to 10 miles in diameter, within a convective storm. In a mesocyclone, air rises and rotates around a vertical axis, usually in the same direction as low pressure systems. They are most often associated with a localised low-pressure region within a severe thunderstorm. Such storms can feature strong surface winds and severe hail. Mesocyclones often occur together with updrafts in supercells, where tornadoes may form. Mesocyclones are believed to form when strong changes of wind speed and/or direction with height("wind shear") sets parts of the lower atmosphere spinning in invisible tube-like rolls. The convective updraft of a thunderstorm is then thought to draw up this spinning air, tilting the rolls’ orientation upward(from parallel to the ground to perpendicular) and causing the entire updraft to rotate as a vertical column.

Ce tunnel horizontal est ensuite poussé par l'air chaud qui monte du sol. Le rouleau d'air se redresse à l'intérieur de la cellule orageuse pour prendre une position verticale. Cette colonne d'air qui pivote sur elle-même dans le nuage s'appelle un mésocyclone.

Most winds travel horizontally, as does most wind shear, but under certain conditions, including thunderstorms and strong frontal systems, wind shear will travel in a vertical direction. Microburst wind shear... can cause an aircraft to lose lift and crash, especially during takeoff or landing, when the slower speeds and closeness to the ground make altitude correction more difficult. Since 1996 all U. S. airliners have been required to be equipped with instruments that provide the pilot with advance warning of wind shear.

wind shear.... Shear usually refers to vertical wind shear(i. e., the change in wind with height) but the term also is used in Doppler radar meteorology to describe changes in radial velocity over short horizontal distances. Moderate to strong wind shear is required for supercell development.

Streaks or wisps of precipitation, such as water or ice particles, that fall from clouds but evaporate before reaching the ground.

Virga is frequently seen trailing from altocumulus and altostratus clouds, but also is discernible below the bases of high-level cumuliform clouds from which precipitation is falling into a dry subcloud layer. It typically exhibits a hooked form in which the streaks descend nearly vertically just under the precipitation source but appear to be almost horizontal at their lower extremities. Such curvature of virga can be produced simply by effects of strong vertical wind shear, but ordinarily it results from the fact that droplet or crystal evaporation decreases the particle terminal fall velocity near the ends of the streaks. Under some conditions, virga are associated with dry microbursts, which are formed as a product of the evaporation.

They are actually altocumulus clouds from which precipitation is falling. Such trails of water droplets or ice particles are called virgae (or sometimes fallstreaks) and, by definition, do not reach the ground.

A high pressure area over Antarctica -- associated with extremely cold and dense air is ringed by easterly winds which form the boundary with the subpolar low pressure belt. These typical features vary in intensity and location according to the season. For instance, in summer the high pressure belt is usually found just south of Australia, while the subtropical easterlies cover most of the continent.
