equilibrium : state of balance. When a body or a system is in equilibrium, there is no net tendency to change. In mechanics, equilibrium has to do with the forces acting on a body.... However, a state of equilibrium does not mean that no forces act on the body, but only that the forces are balanced.... The stability of a body is a measure of its ability to return to a position of equilibrium after being disturbed. It depends on the shape of the body and the location of its center of gravity... A body with a large flat base and a low center of gravity will be very stable, returning quickly to its position of equilibrium after being tipped. However, a body with a small base and high center of gravity will tend to topple if tipped and is thus less stable than the first body. A body balanced precariously on a point is in unstable equilibrium. Another very clever way-out was pioneered by the blind physicist Plateau already in the XIX century : the isodense tank(Plateau tank) with an immiscible liquid to balance the(high) hydrostatic gradient. But on both cases(millimetric-size liquid bridges and Plateau simulation) the mechanical behaviour(statics and dynamics) of liquid bridges is difficult to investigate under ground conditions because both techniques make experimentation difficult, imprecise and can mask effects only measurable under reduced gravity conditions. Very High Gravity Fermentation(VHGF). The VHGF process under development at the University of Saskatchewan used a balance of nutrients, temperature control, oxygen and substrate improvement to achieve ethanol concentrations in the 15-24% range. This was a considerable improvement over the 12% normally seen in the fuel ethanol industry. The advantages include a reduction in water use, increased plant capacity, fewer microbe contaminants in the fermentation, and lower energy requirements during distillation. Procédé de fermentation à très haute densité (FTHD). Ce procédé en cours de développement à l'Université de la Saskatchewan fait appel à un mélange équilibré de nutriments, à la régulation de la température, à l'amélioration de l'apport d'oxygène et de substrat pour obtenir des concentrations d'éthanol de l'ordre de 15 à 24 %. Il s'agit là d'une amélioration considérable par rapport à la concentration de 12 % obtenue normalement dans l'industrie de l'éthanol carburant. Les avantages comprennent une réduction de l'utilisation de l'eau, une augmentation de la capacité de l'usine, la réduction des contaminants microbiens dans la fermentation et la réduction des besoins énergétiques lors de la distillation. Early warm-air systems delivered air to and from rooms by gravity circulation in large ducts connected to the furnace in the basement. Since the only force producing circulation was that due to the small difference in density between the hot supply air and the cold return air, a satisfactory volume of air could be moved only by providing very large air ducts and registers and heating the air to a high temperature.
