Videonystagmography(VNG) is a vestibular assessment of peripheral vestibular systems located in the inner ear and of the central motor functions of eye movement. Visual Vestibular Investigation System(VVIS)(ESA) [European Space Agency]. The VVIS consists of the Body Rotating Device(BRD), Eye Stimulation & Movement Recording System(ESMRS) and Experiment Control System(ECS). The BRD is primarily a seat driven by a motor located in the Spacelab, which is to rotate the test subject, and generates the acceleration. The ESMRS is attached to the top of the BRD and in front of the subject head. On the rotating chair, a constant rotation while in space(i. e., without Earth's gravity pull) stimulates the inner ear the same way tilting to one side does in Earth's gravity. Space Adaptation Syndrome(SAS), also called space motion sickness, is a syndrome that afflicts about half of all space travelers. Symptoms, which resemble those of motion sickness on Earth, range from minor(nausea and headaches) to severe(vomiting) and vary from person to person. Le «mal de l'espace» affecte près de la moitié des astronautes. Un des facteurs pouvant contribuer au mal de l'espace pourrait être un conflit entre les repères visuels des astronautes et l'absence de sensations somatiques (pression sur le pied ou le siège) et au niveau de l'oreille interne. Le mal de l'espace se révèle relativement coûteux : «temps d'arrêt» des astronautes, diminution de la qualité dans l'exécution des travaux et dangers liés à une coordination déficiente. L'expérience sur les repères visuels visera à découvrir la rapidité avec laquelle les astronautes peuvent passer de l'utilisation des organes d'équilibre de l'oreille interne à celle des repères visuels uniquement.
