CVGs [Coriolis vibrating gyroscope] have three features in common : a mechanical resonator, an oscillator and a force-displacement sensor. One mode of the resonator is maintained in resonance by an oscillator loop while oscillations are induced in a second vibration mode. The amplitude of the oscillations gives a signal proportional to the input angular rate. A wide variety of resonators, actuation and sensing schemes are possible. Laser force microscope senses topography by moving a tungsten or silicon probe across a sample(typically a microelectronic component) at a height of a few nanometers. The tip is set vibrating at close to its resonance frequency. Attractive forces... called van der Waals attractions and the surface tension of water that condenses between tip and sample, pull on the tip, changing its resonance frequency and so reducing its vibration amplitude. The variation in the forces, and hence in tip travel, reveals surface relief. A laser probe tracks the tip by means of a beam that is split into two. One of the beams is reflected through a stationary prism; the other passes through a Bragg cell--a device that shifts the beam's frequency--and is reflected from the back of the probe. The gyros are used to maintain the platform’s inertial orientation by sensing rotations of the platform caused by vehicle-rotation-induced friction at the gimbal pivot points ... One gyro - called the vertical gyro - is oriented so its input axes are aligned with the X and Y platform axes; its input axes provide IMU [Inertial Measurement Unit] platform roll and pitch stabilization. The second gyro is oriented so that one input axis lies along the platform’s Z axis and the other lies in the X-Y plane. The sensors for angular velocity are vibrating gyroscopes(3 axes, to detect rotation and pitch/roll pendulations of the payload). An error signal is obtained differencing the signal from the azimuth gyroscope and a constant level settable from the telemetry, which controls the speed of rotation.
