La France a de plus pris une part capitale dans la réalisation des unités de focalisation, en concevant les quadripôles supraconducteurs principaux du LHC [Large Hadron Collider] et leur assemblage dans leurs masses froides. Les 392 aimants quadripôles, désormais tous dans le tunnel, garantiront la focalisation des faisceaux, c'est-à-dire la maîtrise de leur dimension millimétrique tout au long de leur trajectoire. Ces aimants sont insérés dans des enceintes à hélium liquide avec des aimants correcteurs ainsi que bien d'autres composants. Cet assemblage complexe, appelé masse froide, est lui-même entouré par un cryostat et un module d'asservissement. The system-level structural qualification was therefore limited to a modal survey test to validate the ERA [European Robotic Arm] Finite Element Model, followed by a boosted modal survey test. This test programme is designed to qualify the ERA subsystem interfaces and the ERA and Russian launcher interface points that had not previously been subjected to qualification load levels in lower level test programmes. During the boosted modal survey test, ERA was mounted on a special vibration adapter in the Large European Acoustic Facility, with a set of flight-representative Russian launch fixation brackets(Fig. 6). ERA's natural frequencies were excited by mini-shakers at several load points. The spacecraft vibration test facility is used to qualify and accept spacecraft and spacecraft components by simulating the various loading environments imposed on hardware and demonstrating compliance to design specifications.
