S'il y a des contreforts importants, il faut les supprimer en réalisant un «égobelage». Cette opération permet de diminuer le diamètre de l'arbre en créant un tronc cylindrique et va donc faciliter le travail à suivre. Pour réaliser un égobelage correctement, il faut commencer à couper le plus grand contrefort, puis à continuer autour de l'arbre en tournant dans le sens des aiguilles d'une montre.
