The candlesnuffer roof was most frequently found in Germany, Austria and northern European or alpine areas. Its severe pitch sheds water and snow well and the form was introduced into this area by the Pennsylvania Germans and Dutch in the 17th Century.

Sweets were a delicacy in the early days. ... Moreso, sugar came in cones that were rock hard. To remove a chunk from the cone, one used a pair of sugar nippers (also called sugar shears.) Then it was pulverized with a sugar hammer that had a ball (peen) at one end and a hatchet-like blade at the other.

In keeping with the outdoor room concept, these bright, tapestry like flower beds were the Persian rugs of the Victorian garden. Gardeners started decorating lawns early in the Victorian era in single-color geometric beds.

The Royal Victorian Chain is an award, instituted in 1902 by King Edward VII as a personal award of the Monarch(i. e. not an award by the British or any other Commonwealth Realm government). Although it is similar in appearance to the Royal Victorian Order, the two awards are unrelated. The Royal Victorian Chain does not confer upon its recipients any style or title-in fact, the Chain is not even given a precedence within any Commonwealth honours system-but it represents a personal token of high distinction and esteem from the Monarch. The Chain can be conferred upon men and women, both of the Realms and foreign. The chain is in gold, decorated with motifs of Tudor rose, Thistle, Shamrock and Lotus Flower(symbolizing England, Scotland, Ireland and India respectively), and a crowned, red enamelled cipher of King Edward VII "ERI"(Edwardus Rex Imperator), surrounded by a gold wreath for men, upon which the badge is suspended. The chain is worn around the collar by men, or with the four motifs and some chain links fixed to a riband in the form of bow(blue with red-white-red edges) on the left shoulder by women. However the Queen's sister Princess Margaret in later life wore her chain around the collar, as male recipients do.

Costermongers have existed in London since at least the 16th century, when they were mentioned by Shakespeare. They probably were never more numerous than during the Victorian era, when there were said to be over 30, 000 in 1860. They gained a fairly unsavoury reputation for their "low habits, general improvidence, love of gambling, total want of education, disregard for lawful marriage ceremonies, and their use of a peculiar slang language. The Halifax Public Gardens are more than an open space or park. They are a rare example of a formal Victorian public garden surviving intact and relatively unspoiled in the heart of a modern city. Officially opened in 1867 The Halifax Public Gardens have survived for more than a century. Dew Drop glass is the Victorian name sometimes used for hobnail glass, which has a regular pattern of raised knobs like the hobnail studs sometimes used on boot soles. It was developed by an artist at Hobbs Brockunier and Co. in West Virginia in 1886, and was made by first pressing the glass into a mold with hobnails all over it, and then hand-blowing and shaping the piece. In that sense it is just a Victorian name for blown, translucent, Hobnail Glass.

Truly rare quality Canadian coins are very infrequently offered or sold. In many cases, rare coins may appear only once every few years of possibly only once every major coin cycle (5-8 years). The last sale of such an item may be meaningless as an aid to repricing such a coin in a "new" market. "Trends" for such coins are non-existant. Such coins are usually priced by relating them to other similar coins of comparable rarity and using historical relationships of pricing between the two to arrive at a "fair" asking price. In the end the price will be what a willing buyer will pay a willing seller. Considerable research may go in to pricing such coins, certainly more than looking them up in a Trends List.

A term of the British Navy, created in Victorian era. In tropical countries, dress styles tend to be much less formal, even for formal occasions. In some instances, when Black Tie functions are held in private homes, an invitation card will specify "Red Sea Rig"; this means that men are to wear tuxedo attire with bow-tie and cummerbund, but without the jacket.
