Le CD-I fait appel à des techniques très sophistiquées de compression d'images pour pouvoir stocker des images animées, très consommatrices d'espace. L'algorithme de compression est baptisé «Full Motion Video» (FMV). C'est la mise au point de cet algorithme qui a permis au CD-I de pouvoir afficher jusqu'à 72 minutes d'images animées plein écran. La qualité de l'image ainsi traitée est équivalente à celle d'un magnétoscope VHS mais inférieure à celle d'un LaserDisc.

Progressive-scan DVD players add an important additional step to create a better-looking picture-they generate a progressive-scan video signal through a process called de-interlacing(sometimes called "line-doubling"). The de-interlacer's first task is to look at the interlaced video signal as it leaves the MPEG decoder and determine whether its original source was 24-frame-per-second film or 30-frame-per-second video. The original frame rate determines the type of processing necessary to create an optimized progressive-scan signal.

Video cameras. Video cameras can contain many different sensing elements and signal output formats. The majority of camera systems use vidicon tubes as the image-sensing element. A vidicon tube, like the cathode ray tube, contains an electron gun and a screen. These are lowest on the rungs of the video ladder, in that they have less capability than boards that capture streaming video. These cards enable you to grab a single frame of video from a Laser Disk or a VCR. Video frame grabbers come in two varieties : single-frame capture and real-time capture. Single-frame capture boards enable you to freeze a selected frame and record it to your hard disk. In this function, single-frame boards are similar to scanners-they provide a means of capturing an image and saving it for use in a multimedia title.... Real-time frame grabbers capture full-motion video at a rate between 15 and 30 frames-per-second using video compression....

The video-on-demand model takes advantage of some form of two-way communication between the home and the video source, which could be a low-bandwidth back channel on a CATV path or a phone line with sufficient bandwidth to carry a compressed video signal. The home may be furnished with a low-cost box, which accepts signals from a hand-held control and which transmits the appropriate status to the video control center. The viewer uses the hand-held control to navigate a selection menu and choose a program. Shortly after the selection is made, the program begins playing. During the course of the movie the viewer is able to pause, reposition, and use other VCR-like controls.

[Video digitizing cards] All the cards do have a capacity for controlled capture : The card captures a frame; the source device advances to the next frame, which is then digitized; and so on. This type of capturing requires not only a special capture application but also a video-source device with a serial port through which it can be controlled. The advantage of controlled capture is that cards that cannot capture 30 fps in real time, even at 160 X 120 pixels, can capture 30 fps at much larger window sizes with controlled capture, because the card can take as much time as it needs to digitize each frame before moving to the next.
