... each JEM-EF [Japanese experiment module-exposed facility] payload must have a space shuttle-compatible grapple fixture to allow handling of the payload by the JEM remote manipulator system(JEM-RMS), a robotic arm system used for the transport and positioning of external user payloads. The JEM-RMS has both a main arm and a fine arm for robotics manipulation and is operated by the crew from within the JEM-PM [JEM pressurized module] with the aid of a viewing port.

If the pushbroom sensors are capable of starboard and port viewing, SIS [Sensor and Instrument System] could be designed for simultaneous broad area searches and rapid motion detection. By positioning the panchromatic scan line slightly ahead of or slightly behind the multispectral scan line, the sensors could perform a broad area survey and then the two acquired images could be digitally merged together to detect rapid movements. This technique has been applied to SPOT imagery.

The lab [American laboratory module] also features a 20-inch window fashioned from distortion-free glass. The first optical-quality viewing port flown in space, the window will be used for Earth photography, as well as to test new instruments destined for unmanned satellites developed to measure environmental changes.
