The distance at which prominent unlighted objects may be identified by day and prominent lighted objects may be identified by night.

CONT

Visibility for aeronautical purposes is the greater of : a) the greatest distance at which a black object of suitable dimensions, situated near the ground, can be seen and recognized when observed against a bright background; b) the greatest distance at which lights in the vicinity of 1 000 candelas can be seen and identified against an unlit background. The two distances have different values in air of a given extinction coefficient, and the latter b) varies with the background illumination. The former a) is represented by the meteorological optical range(MOR).

La visibilité pour l'exploitation aéronautique correspond à la plus grande des deux valeurs suivantes : a) la plus grande distance à laquelle on peut voir et reconnaître un objet noir de dimensions appropriées situé près du sol lorsqu'il est observé sur un fond lumineux; b) la plus grande distance à laquelle on peut voir et identifier des feux d'une intensité voisine de 1 000 candelas lorsqu'ils sont observés sur un fond non éclairé. Les deux distances sont différentes pour un coefficient d'atténuation donné de l'atmosphère, et la distance b) varie selon la luminance du fond. La distance a) est représentée par la portée optique météorologique (POM).

En sentido aeronáutico se entiende por visibilidad el valor más elevado entre los siguientes: a) la distancia máxima a la que pueda verse y reconocerse un objeto de color negro de dimensiones convenientes, situado cerca del suelo, al ser observado ante un fondo brillante; b) la distancia máxima a la que puedan verse e identificarse las luces de aproximadamente mil candelas ante un fondo no iluminado.

Estas dos distancias tienen distintos valores en una masa de aire de determinado coeficiente de extinción y la distancia de b) varía con la iluminación del fondo. La distancia de a) está representada por el alcance óptico meteorológico (MOR).

The greatest distance in a given direction at which it is just possible to see and identify with the unaided eye: a) in the daytime a prominent dark object against the sky at the horizon, and b) at night, a known, preferably unfocused, moderately intense light source.

Atmospheric visibility is basically a measure of how clear the air is. It is often defined in terms of a visual range (how far an observer can see) and is expressed in nautical miles, miles or kilometers. Precipitation, clouds, and air pollution can reduce atmospheric visibility by increasing the number of small particles in the air that absorb and scatter light.

... pollutants in the atmosphere can degrade visibility, especially near towns and cities. Usually visibility is affected by natural [meteorological] factors such as fog, sea salt particles or low cloud, but sometimes pollution from human activities decreases visibility by causing haze and smog. Sources of this pollution include emissions from vehicles, pollution from home fires and industrial activities.

Visibility is quantified in terms of visual range and light extinction, or the maximum distance at which a black object of sufficient size can be seen and recognised in normal daylight.

Optically, linear perspective offers universal laws for representing space(a well-trained architect can easily see a building through its geometral projection). That is, as a formal set of rules, perspective serves both in the hands of architects and in the hands of artists in order to give the observer a clue regarding the three-dimensionality of an object two-dimensionally rendered. While in the context of architecture the visibility of objects is presented without the issue of ressemblance being even raised, in the context of art the visibility suggested by perspective is assigned the additional representational value of rendering this three-dimensirealistically. Thus, while for architects the use of perspective in drawing plans does not raise the issue of resemblance, in the context of art perspective assumes a relation of resemblance with its object.
