A cloud chamber containing air supersaturated with water vapor by sudden expansion, in which rapidly moving nuclear particles such as alpha or beta rays produced ionization tracks by condensation of vapor on the ions produced by the rays.

Cloud chambers were first developed by Charles T. R. Wilson around 1911 for experiments on the formation of rain clouds. Wilson knew that water vapour condensed around ions, atoms which have become charged by gaining or losing electrons. However, an alpha particle, for example, which had an electric charge, would leave a trail of ions as it passed through a gas. If water vapour condensed on these ions, the track of the alpha particle would become visible as a line of water droplets.

There are two basic types of cloud chambers in use today; (1) the expansion chamber ... which depends upon expansion of the air, within the chamber, to cool it and thus create a supersaturated atmosphere, and (2) the continuous or diffusion type chamber ..., that creates a supersaturated atmosphere by diffusion of vapor from the warm upper region of the chamber to the cooled bottom of the chamber. In both types, electrically charged ions created by nuclear particles colliding with atoms within the chamber atmosphere, serve as nuclei of condensation.

A point release or loose snow avalanche starts when a small amount of loose snow... slips and begins to slide down a slope, setting additional snow in motion. The gustnado has been accepted as a "type of tornado" but is not associated with the typical tornado characteristics. It is a brief, intense vortex that forms on the leading edge of severe gust fronts. Scud and debris or dirt may be seen but a condensation funnel is usually absent. They will last from a few seconds to a minute and are strong enough to cause minor damage. They are distinguished from a true tornado by their location under an advancing dark cloud bank ahead of the rain core. Although the air is rotating, the situation would group this event more appropriately with straight-line winds.

The leading edge of a gust front(or downburst) often creates an area of convergence which can lead to future thunderstorm growth; close monitoring of visible gust fronts becomes very important in forecsting areas of future storm development. Gust fronts from a line of cells, such as a squall line, can form an elongated area of divergence and convergence. These elongated areas or squall line gust fronts are important components to the squall line structure, and often times a producer of severe weather due to straight-line winds.

C'est un tourbillon intense et de courte durée qui se forme sur la bordure antérieure d'un fort front de rafales. On peut voir des nuages en lambeaux et des débris ou de la poussière, mais rarement d'entonnoir de condensation. La «gustnado» dure de quelques secondes à une minute et peut causer des dégâts mineurs. Elle se distingue de la vraie tornade par sa place au-dessous d'un banc de nuages sombres qui approche, à l'avant du noyau de pluie. A variation of the VASIS called the T-VASIS is installed at a few airports. It eliminates the requirement to discriminate colour except in a dangerously low approach when the lights will appear red. The T-VASIS installation consists of 10 lights on each side of the runway; 3 lights in a row parallel to the runway, 4 lights in a bar at right angles to the runway and another 3 lights in a line beyond the bar. On the proper approach slope, only the bar of 4 lights is visible. On a too high approach, the 3 upwind lights also are visible producing an inverted T. On a too low approach, the 3 lights downwind of the bar combine with the bar lights to show an upright T.

Generating a vector, for example, requires many calculations to determine the value of a single pixel. These calculations can be performed while the display controller is scanning a visible portion of a scan line. The identification of pixels to be plotted can be saved on a stack. When the memory is available... the identified pixels can be "blasted" to the screen memory sequentially. Significant performance improvements can be made using this stack-blasting technique.
