Visible dye penetrant inspection makes use of a penetrant that can be easily seen in daylight or with visible light. The penetrant is usually deep red in color so that the indications produce a definite red color as contrasted to the white background of the developer.

Dy-check: trade name for a method whereby the piece is immersed in or brushed with a red penetrant fluid. The excess is wiped off, and a fluid suspension of white powder is applied to the surface. After the surface is dry, the red dye creeps out of the openings, coloring the white coating and outlining the defect.

Using an avalanche cord is the oldest form of equipment-mainly used before beacons became available. The principle is simple. An approximately 10-meter long red cord(similar to parachute cord) is attached to the person in question's belt. While skiing, snowboarding, or walking the cord is dragged along behind the person. If the person gets buried in an avalanche, the light cord stays on top of the snow. Due to the color the cord is easily visible for rescue personnel. Typically the cord has iron markings every one meter that indicate the direction and length to the victim.

The night tracker is a passive device that receives heat emissions(infrared energy) from a target area... and converts the infrared energy to electrical signals and then to visible light. It displays the visible light as a real-time scene for viewing by the gunner. Objects that are warmer than the ambient temperature appear in the night tracker as varying shades of red; objects cooler than ambient temperature appear in the nightsight as black. The night tracker is a larger and heavier tracker than the day tracker, but performs the same functions. The tracker helps the gunner to locate, identify, and track a target.

All objects whose temperatures are above absolute zero emit energy proportional to their temperature. This is called thermal energy. Predominantly green colouration of short duration, often in the form of a flash, seen at the extreme upper edge of a luminary (Sun, Moon, or even a planet) when disappearing below or appearing above the horizon.

When the sun sets, sometimes the last bit of light from the disk itself is an emerald green. The same is true of the first bit of light from the rising sun. This phenomenon is known as the "green flash" or "green ray". It is not an optical illusion. The green flash is common and will be visible any time the sun is rises or sets on a "clear", "unobstructed", and "low" horizon.... The explanation for the green flash is thus, 1) refraction separates the solar images by color; 2) at just the right instant, the red image has set, 3) the yellow image is absorbed; and 4) the blue image is scattered away. We are left with the upper limb of the green image. Because the green flash is primarily a refraction effect, it lasts longer and is easier to see from a mountain top than from sea level.

Ce phénomène de réfraction, qui ne se produit que lorsque l'atmosphère est extrêmement pure et qu'il y a très peu de particules pouvant créer de la diffraction ou dispersion, apparaît très rarement au lever ou au coucher du soleil. Comment cela se passe-t-il? La réfraction du Soleil par l'atmosphère crée un spectre vertical. Au fur et à mesure que le soleil descend sous l'horizon, les couleurs spectrales disparaissent une à une à commencer par le rouge, l'orangé, puis le jaune. Quand ces 3 couleurs sont disparues, quelques fois, à peine le temps d'un éclair, la seule couleur qui reste visible est le vert.

Hungarian Red was originally used as a staining solution in Hungary to stain fingerprints in blood. It was rediscovered in 1995 when a long stored sample that had almost been forgotten was employed at a gruesome murder with lots of blood in Holland. At this scene, a number of footprints were more or less visible. The detective remembered the sample from Hungary. The staining solution worked well, so more was sent from Hungary to process the whole crime scene.

A variation of the VASIS called the T-VASIS is installed at a few airports. It eliminates the requirement to discriminate colour except in a dangerously low approach when the lights will appear red. The T-VASIS installation consists of 10 lights on each side of the runway; 3 lights in a row parallel to the runway, 4 lights in a bar at right angles to the runway and another 3 lights in a line beyond the bar. On the proper approach slope, only the bar of 4 lights is visible. On a too high approach, the 3 upwind lights also are visible producing an inverted T. On a too low approach, the 3 lights downwind of the bar combine with the bar lights to show an upright T.

Le T-VASIS, appelé également VASIS AUSTRALIEN met en jeu 7 barres : une barre centrale constituée par 1 paire centrale de 4 appareils à 3 sources lumineuses et 3 paires d'appareils amont et 3 paires d'appareils aval, soit 60 sources lumineuses en tout. Lorsque le pilote est trop bas, il voit la barre centrale et les feux amont sous l'aspect d'un T. Lorsqu'il est trop haut, il voit un T renversé. Bien placé, le pilote ne voit que la barre centrale. Très, très bas, il voit les barres amont en couleur rouge.

Landing gear visual indicators provide the flight crew with definite reference markings that can be physically checked to ascertain the position of the landing gear overcenter links while the airplane is airborne.... The main gear downlock visual indicators... are two red anodize stripes applied to each main gear downlock hinge.... The nosegear downlock visual indicators... consists of red anodize stripe applied to the upper and lower lock link assemblies at the breakover hinge point. When the nosegear is down and locked, a straight red anodize stripe is visible on the top side of the overcenter link when viewed through the peephole in flight compartment floor. When the nosegear is up and locked, a straight line of scotchlite tape is visible on the right side of the overcenter linkage extending across both upper and lower links, when viewed through the peephole in the flight compartment floor.

SMB-Side Marker Board(Not to be used by B747). 1. This system consists of a white base board with vertical slats mounted at specific intervals along the face of the board. 2. Each slat has a black edge. The side facing the approach direction is green and the opposite side is red. Each slat has a name tab to indicate the aircraft type to which it applies. 3. As the correct stopping position is neared, the green side of the slat gradually disappears until only the black edge is visible. If the correct stop position is passed, the red side begins to appear.
